COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State, 8-1 on the season and ranked ninth nationally in the College Swim Coaches Association of America dual meet poll, will close out its swimming and diving dual meet season Friday, Feb. 5 against Eastern Michigan at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Starting time for the 16-event meet is 5 p.m. and admission is free. 

The meet will be preceded by a celebration and salute to the 14 seniors on the team who, last year as juniors, collectively helped the Buckeyes to a second-place finish at the Big Ten Conference championships, the team’s best finish in 31 years. Their efforts away from the pool also helped Ohio State post the third-highest team grade point average in the nation last year. These 14 gentlemen have experienced much individual success – in and out of the pool – as well. (Brief bios on each are below.)

Here’s Where to Park  Parking is available at an hourly rate in the Neil Avenue Parking Garage just south of theMcCorkle Aquatic Pavilion and the Tuttle Park Place Parking Garage north of the facility. Pay to park – $1 per hour – is also available in the surface lots next to Ohio Stadium. Just remember to pay to park.

Records and Recent Results  Coach Bill Wadley’s Ohio State team is 8-1 in dual meets this season and 3-1 in Big Ten duals. Last week Ohio State could not overcome a first-day lead by a strong, No. 7-ranked Michigan team and dropped its first dual meet season. The Buckeyes did defeat both Northwestern and Penn State in the four-team quadrangular meet at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Victorious for the Buckeyes in the quad meet were:

  • 400 Freestyle Relay – Joel Elber, Andrew Olson, Lincoln Fahrbach and Tim Phillips;
  • Elliott Keefer – 200 breaststroke;
  • Ryan Jefferson – one-meter springboard;
  • 200 Medley Relay – Andrew Elliott, Keefer, Phillips and Elber;
  • Elliott – 100 backstroke; and
  • Wes Wieser – three-meter springboard.

Eastern Michigan wrapped up an unbeaten Mid American Conference season and won its 53rd consecutive MAC meet with a 164-136 win over Miami last weekend. Sophomore Troy Esentan won both the 1000 and 500 freestyle events and was named MAC Swimmer of the Week. The Eagles, under the direction of 21st-year coach Peter Linn, is 6-1 overall. 

The Major Meets are Coming to McCorkle…Soon  The McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion will play host to the two biggest meets of the season: the Big Ten championships Feb. 24-27 and the NCAA championships March 25-27.

Celebrating the Seniors…

Andrew Bretscher is a three-time Ohio State record-holder (100 butterfly and as a member of the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams) … he is a two-time NCAA championships qualifier and he has earned three honorable mention All-America honors. He is majoring in parks and recreation.  

Alex Chen, who is studying aerospace engineering, is a three-time Ohio State Varsity O letterwinner … he swims the distance freestyle events and he has claimed four dual meet wins … he is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a two-time Academic All-Big Ten Conference honoree.

Duncan De Wet swam to a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle last year against West Virginia … a finance major, Duncan is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a two-time honoree on the Academic All-Big Ten Conference team.

Joel Elber, a two-time honorable mention All-American, is a senior team captain for a program-record third time … he was a finalist at the 2009 Big Ten championships in the 50 freestyle and he swam on four school record relay teams last year … he is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete majoring in exercise science.

Ryan Jefferson is a two-time NCAA qualifier on both the 1- and 3-meter springboard events … he was second at the Big Ten championships in 2007 on the 1-meter board … an exercise science major, Ryan is a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.

Daniel Malnik has competed at the Big Ten championships three times and he has scored points in five individual events … he was a finalist in the 200 breaststroke at both the 2007 and 2008 championship meets … a finance major, Dani is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.

George Markovic, a senior captain and a 2008 All-American, is a three-time NCAA individual event qualifier … he has set the school record in the 500 freestyle twice … a finance major, George is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.

Mark Neiman is a three-year scorer for the Buckeyes at the Big Ten championships … a business major, Mark was named to the inaugural Big Ten Distinguished Scholar list … he is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.

Andrew Olson has scored points at the 2008 and 2009 Big Ten championships and he is in the school record books as part of three record-breaking relay teams … he earned honorable mention All-America honors at the 2008 NCAA championships and he is majoring in engineering.

 Sam Pelkey is a Big Ten champion, winning the 200 breaststroke in a school record-breaking time at the 2009 Big Ten championships … Sam has competed at the NCAA championships twice in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events … he is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete majoring in biology.

Niksa Roki is the only current Buckeye with two school records … he owns the fastest time in the 200 butterfly and 200 individual medley … Niksa swam for his country of Croatia at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing … a biology major, Niksa is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete.

Burkley Showe is a four-time NCAA All-American diver and a Big Ten Conference champion … he won his Big Ten title in 2007 on the 1-meter springboard and was named co-Big Ten Diver of the Meet and co-Big Ten Freshman of the Year. He is majoring in business.

Stefan Sigrist is the only Buckeye in school history who has Top 3 times in three events … he holds the 1,650 free record and he has the second-fastest 500 free time and third-fastest 1,000 time … he is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete majoring in political science and economics … he is a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.

Wes Wieser is a two-time Big Ten champion, winning titles in 2007 and 2008 on the 10-meter platform … he competed at both the 2007 and 2008 NCAA championships on all three boards … he earned All-America honors in 2008 and was honorable mention All-American in 2007 … a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, Wes is majoring in computer sciences and engineering.
