COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team topped Northwestern, 2-0, on Alumni Day Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 7-3-1 on the season, 2-0-1 in Big Ten play, while the Wildcats drop to 1-9-0, 0-3-0 in conference play.
The Buckeyes first chance came in the 23rd minute when Kiiri Kuld drilled a shot from just outside the box but Northwestern keeper Anna Cassell came up with the diving save. The rebound bounced out to Caitlyn Martin but her follow from eight yards out drifted wide right.
Tiffany Cameron then gave the Buckeyes the 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute, controlling a long ball from Kristen Niederhaus and beating Cassell from 10 yards out to give Ohio State the lead heading into the half.
Ohio State held a 13-4 lead in shots for the half including 3-1 on goal.
The Buckeyes first solid opportunity in the second half came in the 73rd minute when Kendyl Reed’s header off a Colleen Brady corner was deflected off the crossbar by a Northwestern defender.
Five minutes later, Paige Maxwell doubled the Buckeyes lead when she controlled a loose ball in the box and finished far post from 12 yards out.
Ohio State outshot Northwestern, 18-6, including 4-2 on goal. Goalkeeper Katie Baumgardner recorded her third shutout of the season in the victory.
The Buckeyes travel to State College, Pa., for a 7 p.m. matchup Thursday against Penn State before taking on Wisconsin at 2 p.m. Sunday in Madison, Wis.
