COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing team put forth a solid effort in its season debut at the Penn State Open last weekend, placing nine of its own in the Top 10, including three first-place finishes.

In the men’s foil Competition, graduate Boaz Ellis (Moshav Zippori, Israel) took home first place honors while sophomore teammate Dimitri Kirk-Gordon (so., San Jose, Calif.) placed third. Teammates Joe Streb and Kevin Stuart (sr., Wheaton, Ill.) finished 13th and 14th, respectively, while sophomore Daniel Bass (so., St. Louis, Mo.) placed 44th.

Seven Buckeyes competed in men’s epee, including a seventh place performance turned in by Mykhaylo Mazur (fr., Khmelnitskiy, Ukraine) and an eighth place finish by Jason Pryor (so., Cleveland, Ohio) out of 75 competitors. Graduate Denis Tolkachev (St. Petersburg, Russia) also turned in a strong performance, recording an 11th place finish, while fellow Buckeyes Noam Gill (fr., Hod-Hasharon, Israel) and Alexander Delany (fr., Maplewood, N.J) came in at 17th and 21st, respectively. Rounding out the men’s epee squad was Sean Harder (fr., Redondo Beach, Calif.) who placed 30th, and Christian Rivera (sr., Bloomfield, N.J) who placed 41st.

The men’s sabre competition was dominated by the Scarlet and Gray, receiving a winning performance from graduate Adam Crompton (Newark, N.J). Right behind Crompton was teammate and second-place finisher Mikhail Momtselidze (so., Overland Park, Mo.). Also in action was Jason Paul (sr., Los Angeles, Calif.) who finished 15th. Tom Grant (jr., Des Plaines, Ill.) finished 25th and Dexter Wilde (fr., Chicago, Ill.) placed 26th.

On the women’s side, Siobhan Byrne (jr., Eislingen, Germany) and Eileen Grench (jr., Davis, Calif.) both finished in the Top 3 of the women’s sabre competition. Byrne took home first-place honors, while Grench came in third. Syvenna Siebert (jr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) also competed in the sabre and finished in 15th place.

The women’s foil squad saw Buckeye Julia Tikhonova (fr., Jerusalem, Israel) finish ninth out of 55 competitors and Holly McKibben (fr., Columbus, Ohio) place 32nd.

Alexandra Obrazcova (jr., Daugavpils, Latvia) wrapped up a ninth place finish in the women’s epee competition, while teammates Elyse Gurnowski (fr., Hackettstown, N.J) and Leslie Lampman (jr., Gibsonia, Pa.) finished at 29th and 46th, respectively.

The Buckeyes have a small break in competition before heading to Richmond, Va, for the Division I NAC competition Dec. 9-10.
