COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team opened its Big Ten slate with a 3-1 victory over Maryland (25-19, 17-25, 25-20, 25-22) Wednesday night at the XFINITY Center Pavilion live on the Big Ten Network. The Buckeyes have won five straight matches to improve to 8-5 (1-0 B1G) while the Terrapins fall to 8-5 (0-1 B1G).
Elle Sandbothe had the hot hand as she tallied a career-high 14 kills, hit .611 and had four blocks. Adria Powell notched a season-best 12 kills, three digs, two service aces and a block. Mia Grunze posted nine kills and seven digs while Vanja Bukilić chipped in nine kills, three digs and two rejections. Gabby Gonzales rounded out the offense with seven kills.
Becca Mauer and Mac Podraza once again split the setting duties with 23 and 20 assists, respectively. Kylie Murr chipped in a match-high 18 digs.
SET 1: The Buckeyes came out of the gate swinging as they went on a 7-1 run to open the match. Maryland managed to pull within three at the 18-15 mark but called for time as Ohio State went ahead 21-16. The Buckeyes scored the last three points, highlighted by Powell’s ace, for a 25-19 decision. Grunze was precise as she hit .556 (6-1-9) during the frame.
SET 2: After exchanging points, Ohio State needed a timeout as it trailed 14-12. The Buckeyes used their second timeout down 19-14 but the Terps rolled to a 25-17 win.
SET 3: Maryland was behind 11-9 to get things going. Ohio State scored six straight points to push its advantage to 17-9 and send the Terps to their bench. The Buckeyes needed a late timeout to get back on track for a 25-20 edge.
SET 4: Ohio State erased a five-point deficit to lock the score at 13-13. The Buckeye fell behind 19-16 but made up the difference to tie things at 19-all. Kills from Gonzales gave Ohio State a two-point lead as Maryland burned a timeout. Double blocks by Sandbothe and Gonzales sealed the victory, 25-22.
Ohio State takes a trip up north to face Michigan on Sunday, Sept. 29. First serve is at 2 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.
