COLUMBUS, Ohio – The first place Ohio State Buckeyes rallied to score five runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Penn State Nittany Lions 10-8 on Sunday. The victory concluded a four-game sweep of the Nittany Lions by the Buckeyes. OSU has now won 11 consecutive games and 25 of its last 26. The Buckeyes improved to 32-7 (15-1) and the Nittany Lions dropped to 23-18 (5-10).
Tom Durant (Sr., Columbus) led a balanced attack for OSU with three hits and two runs scored. Andy Lee (Sr., West Chester, OH) picked up the victory in relief for the Buckeyes. Lee pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings allowing only one hit and striking out one.
The Buckeyes struck first with three runs in the home half of the first inning. A walk to Mike Lockwood (Jr., Powell, OH) and a single by Tom Durant (SR., Columbus) put runners on first and second with nobody out. Chad Ehrnsberger (So., Kalida, OH) followed with a single which knocked in both runners. Three batters later Matt Middletons (Sr., Conover, OH) single scored Ehrnsberger to put OSU up 3-0.
The Nittany Lions notched their first run in the third inning. Michael Campo drew a walk with one out and advanced to third on an error by shortstop Trent Mcllvain (So., Louisville, OH). Donnie Wrights two-out single cut the Buckeye lead to 3-1.
PSU put three runs on the board in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. Joe Puliafico led off the inning with a double. Shawn Fagan followed with a RBI single. Two batters later Eric Spadt hit a two-run home run to give the Nittany Lions the lead.
The lead would be short lived as OSU scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to tie it at four. Mcllvain walked with one out and scored on Lockwoods third triple of the season. The Nittany Lions broke the tie in the fifth on a solo home run by Donnie Wright to go up 5-4.
PSU extended its lead with three runs in the top of the sixth. Scott Hamilton was hit by a pitch and Brian Harper was inserted as a pinch runner. Spadt then singled. Campo and John Richmond hit back-to-back RBI singles to put the Nittany Lions up by three. With the bases loaded Wright hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 8-4 Penn State.
OSU cut its deficit to three runs in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out rally. A walk to Lockwood was followed by singles by Durant and Jason Trott (Sr., Dublin, OH). Trotts hit scored Lockwood from second to make it 8-5 Nittany Lions after six.
The Buckeyes fought back to take the lead in the eighth. Mcllvain singled to right to start off the inning. Durant then doubled for his third hit of the game. Trott knocked in Mcllvain with a single to center and Ehrnsberger reached on an error that scored Durant. Jason Turner (Jr., Versailles, OH) tied the score with a RBI single. Jason Driscoll (Jr., Middlefield, OH) gave the Buckeyes the lead with a ground out that knocked in Ehrnsberger. Middleton followed with a single to score Turner and finish the scoring.
The Buckeyes next play on Tuesday April 27th at Bill Davis Stadium against Dayton.
