Athletes of the Week
- Michael Henchy of the No. 15 men’s volleyball team helped guide the Buckeyes to a pair of MIVA wins this past weekend on the road. Highlighting his weekend was his performance at Lindenwood Saturday evening. The junior outside hitter led all attackers with 18 kills and his key kills in the third and fourth sets helped lead Ohio State to victory in the match. Overall, Henchy finished the weekend with a 3.43 kills average and added five blocks for the Buckeyes (4-3, 2-0 MIVA).
- Ohio State women’s ice hockey freshman Claudia Kepler tallied three goals and two assists in the Buckeyes’ WCHA series sweep of Minnesota State last weekend. The Verona, Wis., native got Ohio State on the scoreboard first in the first game of the series, scoring at the 16:56 mark of the second period on a power play score before bookending the scoring for the Buckeyes in the second game with her team-best ninth and 10th goals of the season.
No. 24 Men’s Basketball (16-4, 3-4 Big Ten)
Head coach: Thad Matta
- Ohio State defeated Illinois, 62-55, Thursday night at Value City Arena. Three players scored in double figures for Ohio State: LaQuinton Ross (18 points), Lenzelle Smith Jr. (16) and Aaron Craft (11).
- Ross passed the 600-point career milestone against the Illini, and how has 607 points total.
- The Buckeyes return to action Wednesday, Jan. 29 against Penn State at Value City Arena. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
Women’s Basketball (13-10, 3-4 Big Ten)
Head coach: Kevin McGuff
- Ohio State picked up a 61-50 victory over Michigan Thursday night at Crisler Arena.
- Raven Ferguson led Ohio State with 16 points off the bench and Maleeka Kynard added 12, hitting two 3-pointers. Ashley Adams, who was reinserted into the starting lineup for the game, finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
- Ameryst Alston, who battled foul trouble in the second half, scored in double-figures for the 20th time this season with 11 points, hitting 7 of 8 from the line.
- Ohio State fell to Michigan State, 82-68, Sunday afternoon at value City Arena.
- Ferguson led the Buckeyes with a career-high 20 points, three assists and three steals off the bench. Alston scored 16 points and had four assists while Cait Craft chipped in with 12 points.
- The Buckeyes are back in action Thursday at home vs. Illinois. Game time is 7 p.m. ET on BTN.com.
No. 4 Men’s Gymnastics
Head coach: Rustam Sharipov
- The No. 3 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team fell to No. 8 Illinois, 428.450-425.450, Sunday afternoon at Huff Hall in its first dual meet of the season.
- Two Buckeyes won individual event titles against the Illini, as redshirt senior Michael Newburger posted a 16.200 on pommel horse to claim his second consecutive title on the event and freshman Jacob Dastrup notched a career-high 14.850 on parallel bars to claim first place overall.
- Ohio State also posted a season-best 70.500 on floor exercise, led by junior Danny Steiner who scored a 14.850 on the event to finish in second place.
- Ohio State continues its schedule on the road, traveling to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on the No. 2 Wolverines Saturday, Feb. 1 at 2 p.m.
No. 21 Women’s Gymnastics
Head coach: Carey Fagan
- The No. 23 Ohio State women’s gymnastics team posted a season-high team score in a 197.325-195.200 defeat at No. 5 Michigan Saturday afternoon.
- The Buckeyes tied their season-high score on vault with a 48.950, led by senior Sarah Miller who posted a 9.825.
- Ohio State returns home to St. John Arena to face Penn State at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Men’s Ice Hockey (12-9-1, 2-5-1-0 Big Ten)
Head coach: Steve Rohlik
- The Ohio State men’s hockey team was defeated by No. 9 Wisconsin, 5-3, Friday in the Kohl Center in a Big Ten Conference series.
- Junior Ryan Dzingel scored his team-best 14th goal of the year in the first period, while freshmen Nick Schilkey and David Gust added goals in the second and third periods, respectively. Freshman Matt Tomkins made 24 saves in 59:11 for the Buckeyes.
- Ohio State posted a 3-1 win over No. 9-ranked Wisconsin Saturday in the Kohl Center.
- Goals from Schilkey and junior Nick Oddo less than four minutes apart later in the second period led the team to the win, with freshman goalie Christian Frey making 36 saves in the Ohio State net.
- Ohio State returns to action next weekend, hosting Penn State in the first Big Ten Conference series between the teams. The game Friday (7:05 p.m., Buckeye Vision) features Script Ohio on Ice during the first intermission. Saturday (2 p.m., ESPNews) the first 50 years of Ohio State hockey will be celebrated and the All-Buckeye Team will be revealed.
Women’s Ice Hockey (9-12-5, 4-11-5 WCHA)
Head coach: Nate Handrahan
- Sophomore Julia McKinnon’s goal 38 seconds into overtime gave the Buckeyes a 3-2 victory over Minnesota State Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink.
- Freshman Claudia Kepler got the Buckeyes on the scoreboard first at the 16:56 mark of the second period on a power play score; her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Another power play goal, this one from senior Ally Tarr at 2:48 of the third, would put the Buckeyes up 2-0. Tarr has found the back of the net six times this season.
- Ohio State completed its first WCHA series sweep of the season with a 4-2 win over Minnesota State Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink.
- Kepler bookended the scoring on the day for the Buckeyes with her team-best ninth and 10th goals of the season while Curtis and junior Danielle Gagne also tallied goals. Senior goaltender Lisa Steffes made 27 saves.
- Ohio State will face WCHA foe St. Cloud State next weekend in St. Cloud, Minn., Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
Men’s Lacrosse
Head coach: Nick Myers
- The Ohio State men’s lacrosse team, ranked preseason No. 7 in Face-Off Yearbook, hosted Navy in a scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. The Buckeyes will compete in their third and final scrimmage of the season, hosting Robert Morris Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center before opening the regular season at Johns Hopkins Feb. 9 and vs. UMass in the Moe’s Southwest Grill Classic in Jacksonville, Fla., Feb. 16.
Pistol
Head coach: James Sweeney
- The Ohio State University pistol team scored a 5,414 to defeat The Citadel (5,030), Cedarville University (4,269) and Purdue (3,870) at the Winter Open Championships.
- Senior Jason Reineck won free pistol (265) and senior Joe Totts claimed first place in standard pistol (551), air pistol (563) and three-gun aggregate (1,369). Senior Kim Hullings claimed first place in women’s sport (566), women’s air (366) and two-gun aggregate (932).
- The Buckeyes return to action at the Collegiate Sectionals Jan. 31 – Feb. 1 at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range.
No. 6 Rifle
Head coach: Ryan Tanoue
- The Ohio State rifle team competed at Murray State Saturday, Jan. 25.
No. 11 Men’s Swimming and Diving
Head coach: Bill Wadley
- Due to the weather conditions this past weekend, the Ohio State men’s swimming team did not travel to Eastern Michigan for their scheduled tri-meet with Ball State and Eastern Michigan. The teams will attempt to reschedule the meet for either later this season or next season.
- The Buckeye divers did compete against EMU and Ball State. Junior Stephen Ettienne took first place in the 3-meter dive with a final score of 339.5. His score meets NCAA qualifying standards.
- The Buckeyes return to action next weekend, Jan. 31-Feb. 1. The men host West Virginia on Friday, Jan. 31 and No. 1 Michigan on Saturday, Feb. 1.
No. 19 Women’s Swimming and Diving
Head coach: Bill Dorenkott
- Due to the weather conditions this past weekend, the Ohio State women’s swimming team did not travel to Eastern Michigan for their scheduled tri-meet with Ball State and Eastern Michigan. The teams will attempt to reschedule the meet for either later this season or next season.
- The Buckeye divers did compete against EMU and Ball State. Junior Taylor Ford was third in the 1-meter dive (268.00) and fifth in the 3-meter dive (255.80). Freshman Beth Dzwierzynski finished sixth in the 3-meter dive (232.75).
- The Buckeyes return to action next weekend, Jan. 31-Feb. 1. The women compete against Nebraska and No. 21 Michigan on both Friday and Saturday.
Synchronized Swimming
Head coach: Holly Vargo-Brown
- Ohio State had a bye weekend; the Buckeyes return to action at 4 p.m. Feb. 1 in their second home meet of the season at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
No. 5 Men’s Tennis
Head Coach: Ty Tucker
- The No. 5 Ohio State men’s tennis team began the 2014 campaign with two 7-0 victories over Butler and Xavier, respectively, Wednesday at the Varsity Tennis Center.
- Ohio State continued its home dominance with its third shutout of the season, defeating the Denver Pioneers, 4-0, in the opening match of the 2014 ITA Kick-Off at the Varsity Tennis Center.
- Ohio State claimed two wins Sunday at the Varsity Indoor Tennis Center, defeating No. 48 Louisville and Toledo, marking director of tennis and head coach Ty Tucker’s 400th career win at Ohio State.
- With the win over the Cardinals, Ohio State advances to the ITA National Team Indoor, to be hosted by Texas A&M University Feb. 14-17 in Houston.
- The Buckeyes return to action Feb. 4, hosting Youngstown State (3 p.m.) and Wright State (7 p.m.) in a doubleheader at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Women’s Tennis
Head coach: Melissa Schaub
- The Ohio State women’s tennis team fell to No. 9 Miami, 4-2, Friday in Coral Gables, Fla.
- Buckeye freshmen Ferny Angeles Paz and Sandy Niehaus each collected singles victories in super tiebreakers. Niehaus defeated Clementina Riobueno (4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (11-9)), while Paz notched a 6-3, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5), win over Lina Lilekite.
- Ohio State dropped a 4-1 decision to South Florida Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla., in its second match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
- Niehaus collected a point for the Buckeyes, defeating Vera Bessonova in straight sets 6-3, 6-0, on court five.
- Up next, the Buckeyes will host their home opener Jan. 31 with a doubleheader vs. Syracuse at 1 p.m. and Youngstown State at 6 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio at the Varsity Tennis Center. The game vs. the Penguins is the team’s Go Pink match.
Men’s Track and Field
Head coach: Ed Beathea
- Senior Cory Kunze won the heptathlon (5,304 points) Saturday afternoon at the Rod McCravy Memorial in Lexington, Ky., highlighting the final day of competition for the Ohio State men’s track and field team. His score ranks eighth in Division I this season.
- Timothy Faust placed third overall in the 200m with a time of 21.27, while Jordan Rispress was the runner-up in the 600m with a time of 1:11.73.
- Ohio State returns to action next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 31-Feb. 1, at the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Ind.
Women’s Track and Field
Head coach: Karen Dennis
- The Ohio State women’s track and field team completed competition at the Gladstein Invitational Saturday afternoon in Bloomington, Ind.
- Senior Chesna Sykes posted the top time of the day in the 60m, crossing the finish line in 7.39 seconds.
- Sykes and Aliyah Everson placed first and second in the 200m, with times of 24.62 and 24.83, respectively, while freshman Aaliyah Barnes raced to a first-place time of 57.36 in the 400m.
- Ohio State returns to action in two weeks at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational in New York City.
No. 15 Men’s Volleyball (4-3, 2-0 MIVA)
Head coach: Pete Hanson
- The No. 15 Ohio State men’s volleyball team picked up a 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-23) victory at Quincy to open MIVA play Friday night.
- Junior opposite Andrew Lutz tied a season-high with 16 kills in the match and added six digs. Junior outside hitter Michael Henchy finished with six kills and three blocks, while redshirt freshman Driss Guessous had a team-high four blocks. Lutz and sophomore Mitch Vallis had two service aces each in the win.
- Ohio State completed the weekend with a 3-1 (25-18, 16-25, 25-22, 25-17) win over MIVA opponent Lindenwood Saturday night in St. Charles, Mo. Henchy and Lutz combined for 35 kills in the match.
- The win marked head coach Pete Hanson’s 250th victory in MIVA play. Hanson, in his 30th season with the Buckeyes, now stands at 250-76 in the conference and is 585-308 overall at Ohio State.
- Henchy led all attackers with a season-high 18 kills, while Lutz picked up a season-best 17 kills for the Buckeyes (4-3, 2-0 MIVA) and tied a season-high with two service aces. Redshirt junior Peter Heinen finished with 41 assists and a team-high eight digs.
- Ohio State continues its road swing next week, traveling No. 2 Loyola-Chicago, Feb. 1. The Buckeyes and the Ramblers will face off at 5 p.m. ET in Chicago.
No. 11 Wrestling (7-3, 2-3 Big Ten)
Head coach: Tom Ryan
- The Ohio State wrestling team lost, 28-12, to No. 10 Nebraska Friday night at St. John Arena.
- In the match Friday night, Buckeyes Johnni DiJulius, Logan Stieber and Nick Heflin earned wins at 133, 141 and 197 pounds respectively.
- DiJulius secured points for the Buckeyes first with his 2-1 decision vs. Shawn Nagel. Up next, Stieber earned his 14th bonus point victory of the season after pinning Colton McCrystal in 2:19. Heflin was the last Buckeye to score with his dramatic 3-1 sudden victory over Caleb Colb.
- Ohio State returns to action when it hosts No. 12 Michigan at 7 p.m. Jan. 31. The match between the Buckeyes and Wolverines will be streamed live on Buckeye Vision.
