COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw against Wisconsin Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The match was the first tie of the season for either team as the Buckeyes move to 7-4-1, 2-2-1 in Big Ten play, and the Badgers also go to 7-4-1, 1-3-1 in conference play.
“We saw two teams that played extremely hard Thursday and that became obvious late in our game,” head coach Lori Walker said. “There were a lot of tired legs on both sides so I think a tie was the right outcome as neither team made that brutal mistake that the other team could capitalize on. It doesn’t feel good to tie but we need to more on from here.”
Less than two minutes in, the Buckeyes had their first chance when Michela Paradiso stole the ball from a Wisconsin defender, dribbled to the top of the box and fired a low shot but Wisconsin goalkeeper Genevieve Richard made the diving save.
Tiffany Cameron then had a chance of her own in the 18th minute when she tracked down a long ball on the right wing from Megan Fuller and tried to finish far post from eight yards but Richard was able to get a hand on it and deflect it away.
Neither team was able to get much going the rest of the half as the teams went into the break scoreless. Ohio State held a 5-3 advantage in shots, including 2-1 on goal, over the first 45 minutes. The Buckeyes also led in corner kicks, 3-0.
Ohio State tallied its best chance of the game in the 62nd minute when Cameron played a beautiful cross to Caroline Murray but her volley from eight yards out narrowly missed wide left.
The Buckeyes had another chance in the 86th minute when Kristen Niederhaus controlled the ball at the top of the box and drilled a shot that was deflected over the crossbar by Richard as the teams headed into overtime scoreless.
In the first extra period, Cameron made an excellent run parallel to the end line and almost finished from inside the six-yard box but Richard made another save to keep the game scoreless after 100 minutes.
Neither team tallied anything in the second overtime as the game ended in a scoreless draw.
For the game, Ohio State held a 15-12 advantage in shots, 6-2 on frame. Cameron tallied five shots, putting four on goal for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State (7-4-1, 2-2-1 Big Ten) is off until it hosts Purdue at 3 p.m. Oct. 7 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
