Ohio State and Iowa Meet in a Top-20 Matchup

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s gymnastics team continued on with its 2021 campaign with a Top 20 matchup against the Iowa Hawkeyes Saturday evening in Iowa City. The No. 9 Hawkeyes defeated the No. 13 Buckeyes, 196.550-193.800, in a meet held at Iowa’s Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Ohio State is now 0-2 on the young season and will welcome its first home meet of the year this Saturday at the Covelli Center against No. 3 Michigan. Ohio State and Michigan opened the season last week in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines won despite Ohio State’s highest season-opening score in school history, 196.000. Iowa is now 1-1 on the year.

Two Buckeyes won events. Junior Sydney Jennings won on vault and sophomore Ella Hodges tied for first on beam.

Ohio State opened on bars and scored a 48.150 with Jenna Swartzentruber leading Ohio State and tying for third overall with a score of 9.850. Colby Miller scored 9.800 and was seventh overall. Iowa, meanwhile, scored 48.850 as a team on vault to take the early lead.

Up next for the Buckeyes was vault. Ohio State scored 48.925 as Jennings hit an event-winning 9.850 score and Elexis Edwards scored 9.825 to top the Ohio State competitors. Edwards’ score was tied for second overall. Nicole Riccardi tied for fourth with a score of 9.800. Iowa scored 49.275 on bars to win the first two events and increase its lead, 98.125-97.075.

Floor exercise followed for the scarlet and gray and the Buckeyes scored 47.900 with Claire Gagliardi leading the team with a 9.850 routine that was good for fourth place overall. Emma Pritchard was next for the Buckeyes with a 9.750 score. Iowa was on beam and scored a 49.050 to build upon its lead.

Ohio State closed out the meet on beam, scoring a 48.825 for its final score of 193.800. A fourth different Buckeye led the way on beam as Hodges scored 9.875 which tied for first overall. Alexis Hankins was next for Ohio State with a score of 9.800.
