COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s tennis team continued play at the 2014 USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Friday in Urbana, Illinois. Junior Grainne O’Neill clinched a spot in the singles main draw, while two Buckeye doubles teams advanced to the third round of competition at the event.

O’Neill notched her third-consecutive win of the tournament in the singles qualifier to secure her spot in the main draw singles bracket. O’Neill defeated Illinois’ Jerricka Boone in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, and will join Buckeye teammates Gabriella De Santis, Sandy Niehaus, Anna Sanford, Ferny Angeles Paz and Miho Kowase in the main draw Saturday. This is the second-consecutive year O’Neill has advanced to the main draw from the singles qualifier.

Doubles main draw action began Friday afternoon featuring three Buckeye tandems. After receiving a bye in the first round, De Santis and Niehaus, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, defeated Milwaukee’s Christina Colarossi and Alysa Straub, 8-2 in the round of 32. No. 7-seed Sanford and O’Neill, who also received a bye in the first round, teamed up to top Marquette’s Aleeza Kanner and Ali Dawson, 8-4, and advance to the round of 16.  Kowase and Angeles Paz fell in the first round to Wisconsin’s Lauren Burich and Kelsey Grambeau.

Saturday will begin with the third round of doubles at 10 a.m. ET, followed by the first two rounds of main draw singles.
