COLUMBUS, Ohio – The ninth-ranked Ohio State (1-0) women’s lacrosse team held off No. 14 Stanford (3-1) with a 10-9 victory in overtime. OSU’s Regina Oliver (Jr., Pottstown, Pa.) scored a game-high four goals, including the overtime winner while Natale Miller (Fr., West Chester, Pa.) and Amy Tulk (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) added two goals each for the Buckeyes. For Stanford, Nana Pantano, Michelle DeChant and Sarah Bach contributed two goals each for the Cardinal.
OSU’s Miller opened the scoring at three minutes for a 1-0 Buckeye lead. Stanford’s DeChant scored goals at 5:18 and 13:27 with assists from Cassie Harvey and Kelsey Twist, respectively to give the Cardinal a 2-1 lead. OSU’s Oliver tallied a goal at 15:35 to tie the score at two. Stanford regained the lead with a goal by Bach at 15:03 for a 3-2 lead. Ohio State ran off four straight goals to open a 6-3 lead. Tulk scored at 16:14 with an assist from Melissa Sands (Jr., Fallston, Md.). Buckeye Kelyn Laws (Fr., Ellicott City, Md.) made it 4-3 with a goal at 18:59. Natale Miller (Birmingham, Pa.), with an assist from Caroline Weatherill (Sr., Malvern, Pa.) made it 5-3. Weatherill added a goal at 26:02 to give Ohio State a 6-3 lead. Stanford’s Megan Burker cut the lead to 6-4 with a score at 26:43. Oliver’s second goal of the game at 28:30 and Tulk’s score with 13 seconds left in the half (29:47), with an assist from Ashley Evans (Jr., Ellicott City, Md.) made it an 8-4 lead at the half. OSU’s Oliver third goal of the night at 32:42 of the second half gave the Buckeyes a five-goal lead. The Cardinal scored five unanswered goals to tie the game at nine. Bach’s second goal of the contest started the scoring run at 33:47. Kelsey Twist made it 9-6, scoring at 35:01. Stanford’s Nina Pantano, with an assist from Twist scored at 35:29 and with a Claire Calzonetti score at 56:02, Stanford trailed by one at 9-8. Ohio State was whistled for a foul with eight second left in regulation time and Pantano scored an unassisted goal (59:52) to tie the score at nine, ending the second half.
In the first three-minute period of overtime, each squad managed only one shot. Oliver’s shot, her fourth goal of the game, tallied the winner in the final minute of the second three minute of overtime at 65:03 to give Ohio State a 10-9 victory over Stanford.
In goal for Ohio State, Kim Hastings (So., Sewickley, Pa.) had the start making seven saves and giving up five goals. Taryn Bowen (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) saw action during the game, recording two saves and giving up four goals. For Stanford, Christina Saikus played the entire game recording 20 saves while giving up 10 goals.
The Buckeyes continue on the West Coast with a Sunday, 1 p.m. PT game at California (1-2).
