UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – After dropping the first set, the ninth-ranked Ohio State men’s volleyball team defeated Cal-Baptist, 3-1 (23-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-21), Friday evening in the Penn State Invitational at Rec Hall. The Buckeyes improve to 7-4 on the season while Cal-Baptist falls to 2-6, five of those losses coming to Top 25 teams nationally.

Shawn Sangrey recorded a match-high 23 kills, nine digs and three block assists for the Buckeyes. Chen Levitan and Mik Berzins tallied 16 and 12 kills, respectively. Peter Heinen led Ohio State with 55 assists.

Kristopher Johnson paced the Lancers with 17 kills while Daniel Freitas added 13 and Aaron McCalmont followed with 12. Johnson led Cal-Baptist with five blocks while Connor Metcalfe recorded 49 assists.

After Cal-Baptist opened the match with 13-11 lead, Ohio State came back to take a 15-14 advantage behind a kill from Peter Heinen and a pair of Lancer errors. Ohio State took the lead to 20-18 but Cal-Baptist closed that set on a 7-3 rally, bolstered by a pair of Buckeye errors and two kills by Johnson, to open the match with 25-23 win.

The two teams exchanged points to begin the second set before Ohio State used three kills and a service ace from Sangrey to take an 18-12 lead. However, the Lancers came back to tie the set at 24 apiece. The two teams exchanged points before kills by Berzins and Levitan gave the Buckeyes the 27-25 victory.

Ohio State opened the third set with a 9-5 lead behind three kills from Levitan before Cal-Baptist came back to cut the advantage to 11-10. The teams exchanged points until the Lancers went on a three-point rally to take a 17-16 lead and force an Ohio State timeout. The Lancers then pushed the lead to 19-17 before Ohio State responded with a kill from Sangrey and two from Levitan, sandwiched around an attack error from Johnson, to take a 21-19 lead. Levitan followed with two more kills along with a pair of Lancer attack errors as Ohio State won the set 25-20.

The Buckeyes jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set before two kills by Freitas and two Ohio State errors gave the Lancers a 7-6 advantage. The teams went back and forth until kills by Sangrey and Levitan and a Lancer error put Ohio State ahead 15-13. Cal-Baptist came back to tie it at 15 apiece but the Lancers followed with a service error and Shawn Herron tallied a solo block to give Ohio State a 17-15 lead and force a Cal-Baptist timeout. Ohio State then increased its lead to 24-18 and finished with a 25-21 fourth-set victory.

The Buckeyes take on Mount Olive at 5 p.m. Saturday in University Park.
