COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9/8 Ohio State men’s volleyball team pushed the No. 6/4 Penn State Nittany Lions to their first five-set match this season, but the Buckeyes’ come back fell short as the team lost 3-2 (25-17, 25-19, 27-29, 22-25, 15-13) Saturday night in Rec Hall.

Seniors Shawn Sangrey and Mik Berzins each finished with a double-double in the match to lead Ohio State (13-6). Sangrey had a match-high 24 kills and totaled 12 digs, while Berzins had 10 kills and a team-best 13 digs. Each added four blocks in the match.

Redshirt freshman Peter Heinen had 46 assists for the Buckeyes and totaled six digs and three solo blocks. Senior Anthony Hock had seven kills and eight digs, while redshirt junior John Tholen finished with six kills and five blocks (2s, 3a).

Three Nittany Lions finished with double-digit kills in Nick Goodell (20), Joe Sunder (15) and Peter Russell (11). Sunder added 13 digs, while libero Connor Curry had 10. Setter Edgardo Goas dished out a match-high 54 assists.

The Nittany Lions (13-1) took a quick 3-0 lead in the opening stanza and back-to-back kills gave the home squad a 6-2 advantage. A kill by Tholen cut the lead to two at 9-7, but PSU pushed a 2-0 run to make it 11-7. Down eight at 19-11, a Penn State error and a Berzins/Grayson Overman block set the score at 19-13. A pair of Buckeye errors gave PSU set point and the home team went on to take a 25-17 win.

After a Hock service ace gave the Buckeyes a quick 1-0 lead, Penn State followed with a three-point run to go up 3-1. OSU locked it up at four apiece and a kill by Sangrey and a Sangrey/Tholen block gave the Buckeyes a 7-5 lead. The Nittany Lions battled back and pushed an 8-2 run for a 13-9 lead. PSU held on throughout the rest of the set for a 25-19 win.

Tied at 2-2 in the third, a kill by Tholen triggered a three-point run for a 5-2 Ohio State lead. At 11-9, a kill and a solo block by Tholen put the Buckeyes ahead at 13-9 and OSU kept its lead throughout the set. PSU whittled away at the Buckeye lead towards the end of the set and locked the score at 23 apiece. The teams exchanged points until a kill by Berzins and another by Hock solidified a 29-27 OSU win.

Both squads battled back and forth at the start of set four for a substantial lead. Back-to-back PSU errors put Ohio State up at 8-7, but the Nittany Lions came back for a one-point lead at 9-8. Tied at 11-11, a solo block and kill by Heinen gave the Buckeyes a 13-11 advantage and the team held on to the slim lead. PSU locked the scored at 20 and pushed ahead at 22-21 to force a Buckeye timeout. Ohio State came out on a four-point run and took set four, 25-22.

At 2-2 in the fifth, a kill by Berzins and a Tholen/Sangrey block set the score 4-2 in favor of Ohio State. Two straight Buckeye errors tied it up at 6-6 and the teams went back and forth for the lead. Locked at 13-13, an OSU error gave Penn State set point and the home team took the match with a 15-13 win.

Ohio State takes two weeks off from competition before hitting the road for a MIVA match up at Ball State. The Buckeyes and the Cardinals face off in Muncie, Ind., March 18, in a 5 p.m. ET match.
