COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9/10 Ohio State women’s hockey team got a one-goal lead halfway through the first period and held it to defeat Minnesota State, 1-0, in the opening game of a best-of-three first round WCHA playoff series Friday at OSU Ice Rink. Senior defenseman Amber Bowman scored the lone goal of the game while classmate Erika Vanderveer stopped all 20 shots faced for the shutout.

Ohio State set a program record with its 19th win of the season, improving to 19-12-4 overall (13-11-4 WCHA). The Buckeyes are one win away from advancing to the WCHA Playoff Championships March 3-4 in Minneapolis. Minnesota State fell to .500 on the season at 16-16-3 overall (12-14-2 WCHA).

The only goal came 12:35 into the game when Ohio State scored a delayed penalty goal while skating with an extra attacker. Sophomore Morgan Marziali (St. Mary’s, Ontario/London Devilettes) passed the puck to Bowman (Innisfil, Ontario/Beatrice Jr. Aeros), who was just over the blue line near the right boards. She fired the puck across the slot and tucked it into the left corner of the net for her ninth goal of the season. The assist was Marziali’s 11th of the year while junior defenseman Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, Ontario/Sudbury Lady Wolves) picked up the other assist, her 21st.

Vanderveer (Bradford, Ontario/Mississauga Jr. Chiefs) made solid saves throughout the game and the OSU defense limited Minnesota State’s scoring chances, including just two shots on goal during four Maverick power play opportunities, to hold on for the 1-0 victory. The shutout was Vanderveer’s fourth of the season and 10th of her career. She improves to 17-9-3 and is only one win away from tying the OSU season record.

Ohio State finished with 35 shots on goal and a 0-for-4 mark on the power play. It was the first 1-0 win for the Buckeyes since Jan. 18, 2003 at St. Cloud State.

The Buckeyes and Mavericks will face off in the second game of the playoff series Saturday at 4:07 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink. Tickets are available on site at $5 for adults and $3 for students.
