COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 9/10 Ohio State men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 15-12) match at MIVA opponent Ball State Sunday in Worthen Arena.
With the loss, Ohio State now stands at 13-7 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Ball State moves to 12-7 on the season and 4-4 in MIVA play.
A trio of Buckeyes finished with double-double performances on the night in seniors Shawn Sangrey and Mik Berzins along with redshirt freshman Peter Heinen. Sangrey had a match-high 24 kills and added 10 digs, while Berzins finished with career-high 16 kills and a team-best 17 digs. Heinen notched 57 assists and 13 digs in the match.
Ball State also had three student-athletes finish with double-doubles in Greg Herceg, Dan Wichmann and Larry Wrather. Herceg had 22 kills and 10 digs, while Wrather added 10 kills and a match-high 19 digs. Wichmann totaled 60 assists and 10 digs for the Cardinals. Kevin Owens contributed with 15 kills and Tommy Rouse finished with 18 digs.
The Cardinals opened the match on a 7-4 run and held the lead in the first half of the set. Down 14-10, the Buckeyes pushed a 7-2 rally to take its first lead at 17-16. Kills by Sangrey, Hock and Berzins led to a 21-17 OSU lead and a kill by Tholen gave the Buckeyes a 25-21 first set win.
Ball State took another quick lead in set two, 3-0, but a kill by Sangrey and another by Hock locked the score at 10 apiece. Three-straight Buckeye errors put the Cardinals up 15-14 and the squads exchanged points up to 23-23. A Kill by Herceg and a Herceg/Owens block solidified a 25-23 BSU win.
Kills by Sangrey and Berzins put Ohio State up 3-2 in the third and two more Buckeye kills set the score 10-8 in favor of OSU. Ball State came within a point at 13-12, but Ohio State pulled ahead for an 18-14 lead. The Cardinals put together a 4-1 run late to set the score at 24-23, but a BSU attack error gave the Buckeyes a 25-23 win.
Both teams exchanged four-point runs to open set four until a 6-1 rally pushed Ball State ahead at 14-10. Back-to-back kills by Owens put the Cardinals up 20-17, but the Buckeyes fought back and took a 22-21 lead on a 5-1 run. The home team proved victorious, however, and finished the set on a 4-1 run for a 25-23 win.
A kill by Heinen and a Cardinal attack error led to a 6-4 Buckeye lead in the deciding set. BSU did not falter and, down 10-6, the Cardinals utilized a 9-2 run to close out the match with a 15-12 victory.
The Buckeyes continue MIVA play next weekend, traveling to Quincy, Ill., for a pair of matches vs. the Quincy Hawks, March 23-24.
