COLUMBUS, Ohio — Andrea Braendli stopped 50 shots, but The Ohio State University women’s ice hockey team could not get past the Minnesota Whitecaps, dropping the exhibition series opener 3-2 on Saturday at the OSU Ice Rink.
The Nitty Gritty
First Period
Both teams came out fast and furious in the opening period, with Maltais giving the Buckeyes an early advantage before Brandt evened things up in the closing moments. The first period was rather even between the teams, with the Whitecaps taking a slight shots-on-goal advantage, 15-to-12, into the second period.
Second Period
The 1-1 tied held up through the first half of the period until Maltais put the Buckeyes up once again. OSU carried the 2-1 lead into the third despite the Whitecaps outshooting the Bucks 17-to-7 in the period.
Third Period
OSU continued its attack, on to see the Whitecap defense clamp down in the third. The Buckeyes only got two SOG in the period, and Brandt came to the rescue for Minnesota with less than 10 minutes to play, sending the game into overtime.
Overtime
The Bucks could not get anything going in the extra period despite killing a penalty that carried over from the third period. With less than two minutes remaining it was Boulier’s goal that sealed the deal, handing the Buckeyes a 3-2 loss.
What’s Next?
The two teams wrap up their exhibition series tomorrow with puck drop set for 12:07 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
