EAST LANSING, Mich. – The eighth-ranked Ohio State field hockey team fell to No. 15 Michigan State by a score of 3-2 Saturday in the final conference game of the year to conclude the regular season schedule. The Buckeyes finish their regular season with a record of 14-5, 3-3 in the Big Ten. The Spartans are 11-7, 2-4 in the conference.
Junior Saskia Mueller (Zuerich, Switzerland/Gymnasium Unterstrass) scored unassisted just 1:54 into the game to give the Buckeyes an early 1-0 lead. The goal was Mueller’s eighth of the season.
Michigan State responded with three goals to go into half time with a 3-1 lead. Amy Schneider scored at 4:43 to tie the game at 1-1. Michelle Huynh-Ba then beat OSU goalkeeper Lindsay Williams (Harrisburg, Pa./Susquehanna Township) twice, at 8:07 and 17:32.
Senior Leticia Fragapane (Mendoza, Argentina/Universidad Nacional De Cuyo) scored at 58:50 to cut the lead to 3-2, with an assist from freshman Linda Haussener (Baden, Switzerland/Kantonsschule Baden). It was the 10th goal of the season for Fragapane, while Haussener collected her second assist. The Buckeyes did not allow a shot to Michigan State in the second half, out-shooting MSU 6-0, but were not able to erase the one-goal deficit as Michigan State held their 3-2 lead for the win.
Overall, the Buckeyes had a 14-7 advantage in shots and a 7-1 margin in penalty corners. Williams made three saves in the OSU cage, while Christina Kirkaldy saved eight of 10 shots for Michigan State.
Ohio State next heads to Iowa City, Iowa to participate in the 2005 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament Nov. 4-6. The No.3-seed Buckeyes will face No. 6-seed Michigan State at 3 p.m. (CT) Nov. 4.
