Updated Brackets

COLUMBUS, Ohio– After two sessions, the seventh-ranked Ohio State wrestling team remains in fifth place with 76 points at the 2012 Big Ten Wrestling Championships at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Ind. Redshirt freshman Logan Stieber (133 pounds) will contend for a conference title beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday. The medal rounds of the Big Ten championships will air live on BTN.

Minnesota jumped into the team lead after compiling 117 points. Iowa is in second place with 112.5 points and Penn State is not far behind with 111 points.

In addition to vying for conference titles, each team is looking to send as many individuals as possible to the 2012 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Following the second session, the Buckeyes have automatically qualified six wrestlers in L. Stieber, Cam Tessari (149 pounds), Josh Demas (157 pounds), Nick Heflin (174 pounds), Andrew Campolattano (197 pounds) and Peter Capone (HWT) based on the Big Ten qualifier allocations.

A native of Monroeville, Ohio, Stieber defeated No. 5 Cashé Quiroga of host Purdue 9-6 in the semifinals. Stieber now has a team-leading 27 wins on the season as the No. 1 seed. Up next for Stieber is No. 2 Tony Ramos of Iowa.

Hunter Stieber, the younger brother of Logan, dropped a close 3-1 sudden victory decision to No. 3 Montell Marion of Iowa in the 141-pound semifinal match. H. Stieber, the No. 2 seed, will wrestle Nebraska’s Jake Sueflohn, the No. 5 seed, in wrestlebacks Sunday.

The third Buckeye semifinal contender, redshirt sophomore Heflin lost 15-7 to No. 1 Ed Ruth of Penn State at 174 pounds. Heflin, the fifth seed, will face No. 9 Lee Munster of Northwestern next as he seeks a third-place finish.

In addition to H. Stieber and Heflin, three Buckeyes are still contending for a third-place finish, including Tessari who posted back-to-back victories in the wrestlebacks. The Buckeye freshman from Monroeville, Ohio, opened the day with a 5-2 win vs. No. 11 Skylar Galloway (Nebraska) and then won 15-1 against No. 8 Kaleb Friedley of Northwestern. Tessari, the No. 5 seed, will have his hands full Sunday when he faces No. 2 Eric Grajales of Michigan.

Redshirt freshman and fifth seed Demas collected consecutive wins to keep him in contention for a Top 3 standing. Initially, Demas, a Columbus native, recorded a 12-4 major decision vs. Shawn Perry (Wisconsin). Another bonus-point victory ensued when Demas pinned No. 8 Jackson Morse (Illinois) in 6:04. No. 2 Dylan Alton of Penn State is Demas’ next opponent.

Campolattano’s 4-3 and 10-2 wins over John Schoen (Northwestern) and No. 7 James Nakashima (Nebraska), respectively, propelled the freshman from Bound Brook, N.J., to an opportunity to finish in the Top. 3. The No. 6 seed, Campolattano will meet No. 8 A.J. Kissel of Purdue Sunday.

Seeking a Top 7 finish, freshman Johnni Dijulius suffered an 8-3 setback to No. 7 Camden Eppert of Purdue at 125 pounds in wrestlebacks after downing Indiana’s Zach Zimmer 9-4. The sixth seed from Aurora, Ohio, now will wrestle Austin Hieptas of Wisconsin next.

C.J. Magrum, a redshirt junior from Oak Harbor, Ohio, was forced to default his final match of the day vs. Michigan State’s Ian Hinton at 184 pounds. Magrum, a fifth seed, will try to wrestle for a seventh-place finish Sunday vs. No. 6 Braden Atwood (Purdue). Earlier in the session, Magrum defeated Northwestern’s Robert Kellogg 5-2.

Despite losing back-to-back matches in the heavyweight bracket, Capone wrestled an additional match Saturday evening in an effort to finish ninth. Because the Big Ten Conference was allotted 10 places in the heavyweight division for the NCAA championships, the Buckeye redshirt sophomore from Johnson City, N.Y., wrestled No. 8 Roger Vukobratovich of Purdue and prevailed 16-0. Capone will face No. 3 Ben Apland of Michigan Sunday for a Top 9 placing.

Freshman Derek Garcia (165 pounds) was eliminated from competition.
