EAST LANSING, Mich. – The No. 7 Ohio State men’s hockey team was defeated by Central Collegiate Hockey Association foe Michigan State, 6-3, Friday in Munn Ice Arena. The teams will complete the two-game series at 7:05. Sophomore Sean Collins, junior Dan Knapp and senior JB Bittner scored for the Buckeyes, while junior Rod Pelley added two assists.

Ohio State, which saw its season-high winning streak ended at six, falls to 22-8-3 on the year and 19-5-1 in CCHA play. Second-place OSU drops to three points behind first-place Michigan in the conference standings after the Wolverines defeated the Irish Friday. The Spartans improve to 14-13-4 and 9-11-3 in league play.

The Spartans led 1-0 at the end of the first. Jim McKenzie got MSU on the board at 12:28 with a power-play goal, set up by Drew Miller and Colton Fretter. Ohio State outshot Michigan State in the period, 14-10. OSU’s best chance came when a shot by Collins (So., Troy, Mich.) hit the cross boar with OSU on the power play.

Michigan State added two goals in the second. Ethan Graham scored a four-on-four goal at 11:47, followed by McKenzie’s second power-play goal of the game at 13:08. Michigan State had 16 shots on goal in the period, OSU eight. OSU ended the period with a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:30, but was unable to convert.

The Buckeye drew within two goals in the third (5-3), but that was as close as they could get, as the Spartans sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 18:37. McKenzie completed the hat trick with a goal at 6:17, making the score 5-0. Collins got OSU on the board with a power-play goal at 9:11, taking a pass from Pelley (Jr., Kitimat, British Columbia) and beating MSU goalie Dominic Vicari with a slap shot from the left point. Bryce Anderson (So., Waterloo, Iowa) picked up the second assist on the goal. Knapp (Jr., Rochester, Mich.) made the score 5-2 at 11:02 when he deflected in Tyson Strachan’s (So., Melfort, Saskatchewan) shot, with Pelley also assisting. Bittner (Sr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) then scored a power-play goal at 16:35, assisted by Kyle Hood (Fr., Osoyoos, British Columbia) and Matt Beaudoin (So., Rock Forest, Quebec), drawing OSU to 5-3. The Buckeyes pulled their goalie with 2:07 remaining for the extra attacker, but MSU’s Jim Slater ended the scoring with an empty-netter for the 6-3 final. OSU outshot the Spartans in the period, 16-15. Michigan State had 42 shots in the game, OSU 37. Buckeye junior goalie Dave Caruso (Jr., Roswell, Ga.) ended the game with 29 saves, allowing four goals in 46:17. Freshman Ian Keserich (Parma, Ohio) played 12:59, making seven saves on eight shots. Vicari had 34 saves in 59:30.

Ohio State ended the game 2-for-7 on the power play, while Michigan State was 3-for-8.

Postgame Notes
Pelley’s two assists tied his career high, set twice before, with the last Oct. 21, 2004 against Miami.

Hood extended his scoring streak to four, with 2-3-5 in the stretch. Beaudoin extended his scoring streak to three (3-1-4).

Michigan State ended the game with 42 shots, the first time a Buckeye opponent had over 40 shots since Michigan had 46 Nov. 15, 2003 in Columbus.

The game was the 17th time this season the Buckeyes had multiple power-play goals. It is the first time the team lost when scoring more than one power-play goal, falling to 15-1-1.
