COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 7-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team (2-0, 0-0 B1G) kicked off the spring season with a pair of wins over Bowling Green and Wright State in its home opener doubleheader Friday at the Varsity Tennis Center.

“I thought it was a good first day,” Melissa Schaub, Ohio State head coach, said. “There are definitely things we need to work on and get better with, but you know that coming in. It’s always a little bit of dealing with some nerves since it’s the first match. It was good to get two matches in today and get a lot of different people in some matches. We got to look at some different doubles lineups. I feel pretty good with where we are right now.”

In the first match of the doubleheader vs. Bowling Green, the Buckeyes started off ahead after a forfeit by the Falcons on court three in doubles. Senior Sandy Niehaus and junior Anna Sanford captured a win over Polina Radeva and Ayumi Sasaki 6-2 at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point, while sophomore Francesca Di Lorenzo and senior Miho Kowase defeated Paula Comella and Marharita-Sophia Tavpash 6-3 on court one.

The Buckeyes gained a 2-0 lead after a forfeit on court six to start singles. On court five, sophomore Andrea Ballinger downed Emily Witt 6-1, 6-2, while No. 1-ranked Di Lorenzo cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Comella on court one to secure the win for Ohio State.

De Santis posted a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Tavpash on court two shortly followed by Angeles Paz downing Radeva on court three 6-0, 6-1. No. 88-ranked sophomore Olivia Sneed battled through a close match with Sasaki to guarantee the Ohio State shutout with a 6-4, 6-3 win on court four.

After a short intermission, the Scarlet and Gray were back in action vs. Wright State. In doubles, the Buckeyes defeated the Raiders in all three matches to gain the 1-0 advantage. Di Lorenzo and Sanford teamed up to notch the first doubles win, 6-1, vs. Wright State’s Karoline Haller and Linsey Verstrepen on court two. The duo of Kowase and Angeles Paz shortly followed with a 6-3 victory vs. Elaine Cloern and Haily Morgan at No. 3. On court one, Niehaus and De Santis battled through a close matchup against Tori Turner and Taylor Culbertson to win the last court in a tiebreak, 7-6(4).

In singles, Di Lorenzo posted the first victory for the Buckeyes with a 6-0, 6-1, win vs. Haller on court one. No. 41-ranked Sanford notched the second Ohio State win on court two against Verstrepen, 6-3, 6-0, while Angeles Paz secured the Scarlet and Gray win defeating Turner on court six, 6-0, 6-1. Niehaus topped Morgan on court four 6-1, 6-3 and Kowase notched a 6-3, 6-0 victory vs. Cloern on court five. De Santis won 6-3, 6-2 on court three over Vanessa Madrigal to conclude the day and secure the second Buckeye shutout.

The two wins extended the Buckeyes’ home winning streak to 18.

Looking ahead, the Buckeyes will host ITA Kick-Off Weekend. The Scarlet and Gray will face Florida State in round one Saturday and then take on either Alabama or Harvard on day two Sunday. Admission is free to all matches.
