No. 7 Buckeyes Fall to No. 1 Wisconsin

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 7 Ohio State University women’s ice hockey team could not find an answer for the the No. 1 University of Wisconsin Badgers, dropping Saturday’s series finale 5-2 at the OSU Ice Rink.

The Nitty Gritty

  • The Badgers wasted no time in getting on the board today after getting shutout on Friday, scoring just 52 seconds into the game when Britta Curl found the back of the net.
  • Emma Maltais responded later in the first, scoring her 10th goal of the season to tie things at 1-1.
  • The tie did not hold for long as Sophie Shirley scored near the end of the first to give Wisconsin a 2-1 lead heading into the second.
  • After Annie Pankowski upped the UW lead to two, Sophie Jaques converted on a power play in the closing minute of the second to cut the Wisconsin lead in half, 3-2, going into the third.
  • Everything came up Wisconsin in the third, as Curl scored her second of the game, and Sophia Shaver added an insurance goal to hand the Buckeyes a 5-2 loss.
  • Charly Dahlquist, Sophie Jaques, Jincy Dunne and Liz Schepers tallied assists for the Buckeyes.
  • OSU goaltender Andrea Braendli finished with 40 saves.

First Period

The action came fast and furious in the first with the Badgers scoring in the opening minute, just to have Maltais tie the game at the 10:40 point. As the Buckeyes tried to kill a penalty late in the opening period, Shirley found the back of the net to put UW up 2-1 going into the second.

Second Period

Wisconsin added to its lead early in the second on the Pankowski goal, but the Buckeyes showed life late in the frame when Jaques scored on a power play to make it 3-2 going into the third. The goal is the second of Jaques’ season, and career.

Third Period

As the Buckeyes tried to find the equalizer early in the period the Badgers kept the pressure up, eventually cashing in on Curl’s second goal of the game to pad the lead. A few moments later Shaver found the back of the net, giving Wisconsin the insurance it needed and sealing the 5-2 loss for the Buckeyes.

The Buckeyes are on the road next weekend for a series at Minnesota Duluth. Puck drop for the series opener is set for 8:07 p.m. ET on Friday.
