Columbus, Ohio – The seventh-ranked Ohio State (18-5 overall, 11-1 Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, 1st place) men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (25-27, 25-23, 25-19, 25-21) decision at 15th-ranked Lewis (17-9, 5-4) Saturday night in Neil Carey Arena. OSU’s Kevin Heine posted a team-high 15.5 points with 15 kills (.722) and one assist block. John Klanac and Jason Tobkin added 10 points each for the Buckeyes. Klanac recorded 10 kills (.273) with Tobkin adding eight kills (.125), one ace serve and two assist blocks. Flyer Jay Petty had a match-high 23 points with 22 kills (.400) and two assist blocks. Mike Adams added 14.5 points with seven kills (.150), three ace serves, a solo block and seven assist blocks for Lewis.

Set one opened with OSU kills from Heine and Tobkin for a 2-0 lead. A Matt Gallik kill and an OSU error tied the set at two. At 9-7, a Mike Adams kill and his ace serve tied the set at nine. At 15-all, Lewis took a 16-15 lead with a Petty kill. A Heine-Shawn Sangrey-Tobkin block tied the set at 16. OSU took an 18-16 lead with a kill from Heine and a Tobkin ace serve. At 20-18, an OSU error and an Adams-Aaron Flick block tied the set at 20. OSU responded with kills from Klanac and Sangrey to take a 22-20 lead. Trailing, 23-21, a kill from Petty cut the OSU lead to one at 23-22. OSU reached set point with a kill from Steven Kehoe. A Buckeye error made it 24-23. A Brian Muesenfechter-Gallik block tied the set at 24. OSU had a second set point at 25-24 with a Heine kill. The Flyers tied the set at 25 with a Gallik kill. A Heine kill gave OSU a third set point at 26-25. The Buckeyes won the set, 27-25 off a Flyer error to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Lewis hit .333 for the set to .323 for Ohio State.

The second set saw 21 ties and 13 lead changes. The set came down to a 23-23 tie. An OSU error gave Lewis set point at 24-23. The Flyers, with a Petty kill, won the set, 25-23, to tie the match at one set each. Lewis hit .324 for the set to .267 for Ohio State.

Tied at five in set three, the Flyers scored the next five points to take a 10-5 lead. The run began with a Adams-Gallik-BJ Boldog block. An Adams-Boldog-Flick block, an OSU error, a Flick-Boldog block and a Gallik ace serve completed the run. The Flyers expanded the lead to eight at 16-8. OSU trailed, 23-16, when two Mike Stefani kills and an ace serve from Kehoe cut the lead to four at 23-19. The Flyers reached set point at 24-19 with a kill from Flick. Lewis, with a Petty kill, won the set, 25-19, to take a 2-1 lead in the match. The Flyers hit .125 for the set to -.062 for the Buckeyes.

Lewis broke a 3-3 tie with two kills from Petty to lead, 5-3. A Flyer error made it 5-4. Kills from Boldog and Muesenfechter gave Lewis a 7-4 lead. A Kehoe solo block made it 7-5. An OSU error and kills from Muesenfechter and Petty opened a 10-5 Flyer lead. Lewis held the lead reaching match point at 24-20 with a Gallik kill. OSU stopped the match point with a Tobkin kill. Flick, with a kill, won the set, 25-21, to give Lewis a 3-1 victory in the match. The Flyers hit .531 for the set to .483 for OSU.

For the match, Lewis hit .342 to .246 for Ohio State. Each squad recorded 55 kills with the Flyers having a 51-49 edge in assists. Boldog posted a match-high 46 assists for the Flyers while OSU’s Kehoe produced 40. Lewis had a 4-2 margin in ace serves with Adams posting a match-high three for the Flyers. Lewis gave up 17 service errors to 16 for Ohio State. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 34-33 edge in digs with OSU’s Mik Berzins posting a match-high eight. At the net, Lewis recorded 17.5 team blocks to 6.5 for Ohio State. Adams and Gallik shared match-high honors for the Flyers with eight total blocks each. Adams collected a solo and seven assist blocks, while Gallik recorded eight assists.

Ohio State returns home to face Princeton at 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. OSU returns to the road Sunday for a 5 p.m. match at 10th-ranked Penn State. The match with the Nittany Lions will be carried live on the Big Ten Network.
