MANKATO, Minn. — The Ohio State University women’s ice hockey team hit a wall in the form of the Minnesota State University Mavericks on Saturday, dropping the series opener 3-0 at the Verizon Center.

The Nitty Gritty

  • The Buckeyes outshot the Mavericks, 41-to-22, but could not find an answer for MSU goaltender Abigail Levy. The freshman stopped everything OSU threw at her, handing Ohio State it’s second scoreless game of the season.
  • Both teams went into the third tied at 0-0, but Minnesota State rattled off three goals in the final period to take the opener, 3-0.

First Period

Both goaltenders shined in the opening period, keeping clean sheets through the first 20 minutes. Ohio State held a 12-to-9 SOG advantage after the first, with Jacyn Reeves leading OSU with two SOG.

Second Period

The teams continued to take each other’s best shots in the second, not yielding an inch on either side. The Buckeyes took a 27-to-16 SOG advantage into the third, led by six from Maltais and five from Reeves.

Third Period

Things took a turn for OSU in the third as Anna Wilgren scored on a power play to put MSU ahead. Just over 10 minutes later a goal from Megan Hinze gave the Mavericks some insurance, and an empty netter from Brittyn Fleming with less than 3:00 to play sealed the deal, handing the Buckeyes a 3-0 loss.

What’s Next?

The Buckeyes hit the ice tomorrow looking to earn a split with the Mavericks. Puck drop is set for 3:07 p.m. ET at the Verizon Center.
