COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team began its weekend road trip on Friday with a 3-0 setback at No. 6 Northwestern. The Wildcats scored once in the first, second and third quarters to pick up the win that dropped the Buckeyes’ overall record to 7-6 (1-3 Big Ten). Northwestern is 11-4, 2-3.

The Short Story
Northwestern scored with 2:09 remaining in the first quarter on a goal off a penalty corner and then added scores late in the second quarter (4:13) and third quarter (:58). Maren Seidel had a hand in all three NU goals, scoring two and assisting on one other goal.

How the Goals Were Scored

  • Maddie Zimmer put NU up 1-0 with 2:09 remaining in the first quarter when she took a pass from Kayla Blas and Seidel off a penalty corner. It was Zimmer’s fifth goal of the season.
  • Ohio State’s defense settled in and didn’t allow a Northwestern scoring opportunity until just five minutes remained in the first half. Seidel, however, got on the scoresheet again with an unassisted tally to gives the Wildcats a 2-0 lead at the break.
  • Seidel finished off her two-goal day with under a minute to play in the third quarter thanks to a turnover in Ohio State’s zone. She finished off a pass from Lauren Wadas. 

This and That

  • Sophomore goalie Abby Danson started for the second straight game and finished with a season-high 10 saves.
  • The Buckeyes’ three shots on the afternoon came from three different players: Leanne Bough, Tess Maloney and Katie Pyle.
  • Maloney’s shot was the one that came on goal and was saved by NU’s Annabel Skubisz.
