COLUMBUS, Ohio – In its second match of the weekend vs. a ranked B1G opponent, the No. 54-ranked Ohio State women’s tennis team was edged by No. 37 Illinois, 4-3, Sunday in Champaign-Urbana, Ill.  The Buckeyes move to 11-7 and 2-3 in conference play.

After splitting the first two matches off the court, Illinois claimed the doubles point with a win on court one to take a 1-0 lead vs. the Buckeyes. On court three, Buckeyes Sandy Niehaus and Kelsey Becker dropped an 8-4 decision to Louise Kwong and Jerrika Boone, while the Ohio State freshman tandem of Miho Kowase and Gabriella De Santis notched a 8-5 victory vs. Misia Kedzierski and Allison Falkin on court two to even the doubles score. At No. 1 doubles, No. 69-ranked Noelle Malley and Grainne O’Neill fell to Melissa Kopinski and Alexis Casati, 8-4.

In singles competition, Kowase blanked Casati, 6-0, 6-0, to tie the score at 1-all. Niehaus fell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4, to Kopinski, while Grainne O’Neill responded with a 7-5, 7-5 victory vs. Kedzierski. Despite winning the first set 6-1, Malley dropped back-to-back sets, 6-2, 6-2, to Boone. Flower fell 6-4, 7-5 vs. on court four to seal the team victory for the Illini.

At No. 1 singles, De Santis battled for a three-set victory vs. Allison Falkin. After dropping the first set, 6-3, De Santis fought back to force a third set with a tiebreaker win in the second set, 7-6 (3). The Caracas, Venezuela, native prevailed with a 6-0 win in the third set.

Up next, the Buckeyes return to Columbus, Ohio, for a five-match home stand starting at 3 p.m. Friday vs. Minnesota, with a doubleheader Sunday, hosting Wisconsin at noon and Wright State at 6 p.m.
