Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State field hockey team dropped a 3-0 contest to No. 5 Penn State on Friday at Buckeye Varsity Field. The loss moves Ohio State to 6-6 (0-4 Big Ten), while the Nittany Lions improve to 11-2 (4-1 Big Ten).
Gini Bramley paced the Penn State offense with two goals that both came in the first half to give the Nittany Lions a 2-0 lead. Moira Putsch scored Penn State’s final goal in the 61st minute with the assist going to Aurelia Meijer.
The Nittany Lions outshot the Buckeyes (18-7) and took five penalty corners to Ohio State’s three. The Scarlet and Gray’s best offensive opportunities came early in the first half of three successive penalty corners.
Ohio State’s closest call on scoring a goal came off the stick of Maartje Bongers. After Caroline Rath sent in the penalty corner, Bongers’ shot was deflected by a Penn State defender and ricocheted off the crossbar.
Senior goalkeeper Liz Tamburro had double digit saves for the first time in 2017 with a total of 10. Senior defender Caroline Rath collected the 17th defensive save of her career in the first half to prevent a Penn State goal. Her total of 17 defensive saves ranks No. 1 in the NCAA for active players.
The Buckeyes will have a quick turnaround and will play California on Sunday at 12 p.m. ET for their final non-conference game of the season.
