COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 5 Ohio State University women’s ice hockey team returned home in triumphant fashion, defeating Western Collegiate Hockey Association foe Minnesota State University Mavericks 2-1 on Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink.
The Buckeyes (8-2-1, 6-2-1 WCHA) found themselves in a 1-0 hole late in the first period after Brittyn Fleming scored a goal for the Mavericks with only 10 seconds remaining in the frame. Shots on goal were even for both teams after one, with each squad putting eight shots on net.
Things turned around for OSU in the second period as the Buckeyes put 20 shots on goal. One of those shots came from Lauren Spring, which lit the lamp at the at the 17:49 point of the period, tying the game at 1-1. McKenna Wesloh picked up her second assist of the season on the goal, while Tatum Skaggs earned her fifth assist on the year.
That tie held through most of the third period despite Ohio State putting numerous shots on net. The difference maker proved to be Maddy Field, who scored her team high seventh goal of the year with just over five minutes remaining in the game. Lauren Boyle notched her third assist of the year on the game winning goal.
“We bounced back and showed a lot of fight after a bad weekend,” said head coach Nadine Muzerall. “We didn’t play like ourselves last weekend, but we got back on track tonight. Zeglen made some outstanding saves, and our offensive was firing on all cylinders. We’re in a good place.”
The Buckeyes wrap up their series with Minnesota State on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 2:07 p.m.
