COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 5 Ohio State University women’s ice hockey team bounced back from a disastrous first period to tie with the St. Cloud State University Huskies before winning a shootout on Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink

The Buckeyes (11-3-3, 8-2-3 WCHA) found themselves on the ropes early as the Huskies came out quickly and took a 1-0 lead near the halfway point of the first period on an Abby Thiessen goal. Less than three minutes later Dana Rasmussen found the back of the net to extend the St. Cloud lead, 2-0. Despite trailing by two goals, OSU outshot SCSU 12-to-9 in the opening frame.

The second period nearly went by without a goal, until Tatum Skaggs lit the lamp for Ohio State, cutting the deficit in half with just 33 seconds to play in the second period. Emma Maltais and Jincy Dunne picked up the assists on the goal.

Needing an equalizer in the third period, Julianna Iafallo drove to the net and deposited the puck into it, tying the game at 2-2 with just over eight minutes to play in regulation. Skaggs and Maltais assisted on the tying goal. The Buckeyes tried feverishly to end the game in regulation, but could not make a play and the teams went to overtime.

The extra frame saw the Buckeyes once again outshoot the Huskies, but nothing found the back of the net, and both teams finished the game with a point after the 2-2 tie.

In the shootout, both Kassidy Sauvé and Janine Alder stood tall through four rounds, but a fifth stop by Sauvé left the door open for Grace Zarzecki to score in the fifth round, securing the extra point for Ohio State and winning the shootout 1-0.

Both Skaggs and Maltais finished with two points each, while Sauvé made 29 saves and locked the goal down after the two goals in the first period, not allowing SCSU to light the lamp again the rest of the evening. Dunne finished with a team high three blocked shots to go along with her assist.

The Buckeyes wrap up their series with St. Cloud State on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 3:07 p.m. ET at the OSU Ice Rink.
