COLUMBUS, Ohio — Madison Field played the role of hero on Saturday, netting the game winner and tallying an assist for the Ohio State University women’s ice hockey team to lift them over the Minnesota State Mavericks, 2-1, in overtime at the OSU Ice Rink
The Nitty Gritty
Ohio State came out on fire early in the game, pressing hard and breaking through less than 90 seconds into the game with Schepers third goal of the season. The Mavericks proved that they had come to play, slowing down the OSU attack for the rest of the period. The teams went into the intermission with 10 SOG each, but the Bucks had the 1-0 lead.
The Buckeyes spent a large chunk of the second period on the penalty kill as they were called for five penalties in the period. Though the PK continued to hold firm, the Mavericks scored in the ensuing moments after the first penalty expired to tie the game at 1-1. Minnesota State outshot the Buckeyes for the first time all weekend in the second, putting 18 SOG compared to 10 for OSU.
Ohio State clearly did not want to head to overtime as the Bucks put 20 SOG in the period, while holding MSU to four. None of those shots slipped past Minnesota State goaltender Abigail Levy though, and the teams went to OT tied at 1-1.
In the five minute overtime period OSU put four SOG, with the last one being the most important one. Field took a pass from the charging Maltais and fired the puck into the back of the net, securing the 2-1 win and sweep for OSU.
Ohio State heads to the land of 10,000 lakes for a top five matchup with the No. 3 Minnesota Golden Gophers. Puck drop for the series opener is set for 8:07 p.m. ET in Ridder Arena.
