PITTSBURGH, Pa. — The No. 5 Ohio State University women’s ice hockey team nearly pulled off the sweep, but the No. 9 Robert Morris University Colonials rallied to give the Buckeyes a 3-2 overtime loss on Saturday at the RMU Island Sports Center.
The Buckeyes (11-3-2, 8-2-2 WCHA) once again struck first when Julianna Iafallo lit the lamp for the eighth time this season, giving OSU the 1-0 lead just 4:43 into the game. Jincy Dunne and Emma Maltais earned assists on the goal. The Colonials evened things up with a goal from Lexi Templeman with just over eight minutes left in the period. With less than a minute left in the frame, Iafallo went to the penalty box for hooking, giving RMU a power play heading into the second period.
OSU killed the penalty to open the period, and finally regained the lead on a Maltais goal with 10:30 to play in the second. Lauren Boyle and Lisa Bruno tallied assists on the goal. RMU kept shooting, but could not tie the game as the Buckeyes took a 2-1 lead into the third.
In the third, the Colonials evened the score on a Brittany Howard goal, making it 2-2 with 14:22 to play in regulation. Both teams notched a flurry of shots attempting to end it in regulation, but neither could finish the job in 60 minutes.
Howard scored the game winner for Robert Morris just 1:36 into overtime, giving Ohio State its first non-conference loss since January 3, 2016, a 3-2 loss to Penn State.
Maltais finished with two points, while five different Buckeyes notched a point in the game. Kassidy Sauvé made 38 saves on the day.
The Buckeyes head home to host St. Cloud State next weekend. That series gets underway on Friday at 6:07 p.m. ET at the OSU Ice Rink.
