COLUMBUS, Ohio-The No. 46 Ohio State men’s tennis team defeated Rice, 4-2, after rain moved the match into Jesse Owens West. The Buckeyes record improved to 9-6, 3-1 in the Big Ten and Rice falls to 13-8 overall. Head coach Ty Tucker has steadily guided the Buckeyes to a season that has exceeded the total wins of the previous two years. The current total number of wins is tied with the 1996-97 season (9).
The Ohio State No. 35 duo Andrew Carlson (Jr., Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Chris Porter (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) defeated No. 54 Robert Collins and Prakash Venkataraman, 8-4. Freshman Jon Scale (Actworth, Ga./Harrison) teamed with B.J. Munroe (Jr., Freeport, Bahamas/Freeport) to conclude the doubles point victory over Alexis Pourchet and Cody Jackson, 8-4.
In singles, Carlson led the Buckeyes with the first win in straight sets over Robert Collins (6-2, 6-3). Ohio State’s Porter followed suit with a win over Mattias Mathaes in a tough three-set match, 6-4, 0-6, 6-4. Derek DeFalco (Jr., Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) defeated Cody Jackson, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, to secure a team victory.
Next weekend the Buckeyes will travel to compete against No. 6 Illinois on Apr. 8 and No. 55 Northwestern the following day.
