COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 Ohio State men’s tennis team concluded its first match at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in thrilling fashion, reeling off four-consecutive singles points to defeat 13th-seed Texas Tech, 4-1, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center Friday in Seattle, Wash. With the win, the Buckeyes moved to 10-0 on the season and advanced to their fifth-consecutive quarterfinal at the championship. The Scarlet and Gray will take on No. 5 Texas at 6 p.m. ET Saturday. The Longhorns defeated No. 12 Kentucky earlier in the day, 4-2, to improve to 8-0.
Ohio State is now 2-0 all-time vs. the Red Raiders, with the only previous meeting taking place during the 1988-89 season under former head coach John Daly. The Buckeyes defeated the Red Raiders, 5-4, under Daly’s tutelage. The Texas Tech setback pushes the squad to 6-2 overall, with both losses coming against teams ranked in the ITA Top 10.
The last time the Buckeyes faced the Longhorns was in the 2008 NCAA Championships quarterfinals in Tulsa, Okla. Ohio State lost a 4-2 decision to drop to 0-5 all-time vs. Texas.
In doubles action, Ohio State’s Devin McCarthy and Balazs Novak quickly won their match, 8-2, over Raphael Phister and David Gonzalez. The other two doubles matches were much more competitive with the Red Raiders prevailing in each contest.
Buckeye duo, Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola, the sixth-ranked team nationally, were handed an 8-4 setback by Raony Carvalho and Rafael Garcia, the No. 76 team in the country. Texas Tech’s Gonzalo Escobar and Vitor Manzini beat senior co-captain Matt Allare and redshirt-freshman Peter Kobelt in a hard-fought contest, 8-5, to claim the doubles point for the Red Raiders.
It was the first time this season Ohio State did not win the doubles point.
Rola, a true freshman, continued to impress in singles action, defeating No. 18 Escobar in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 position to even the match at 1-all. The fifth-ranked player in the country, Rola improves to 22-2 in singles action this season.
Novak, a senior co-captain, gave the Buckeyes a 2-1 advantage, downing Phister 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles. Novak’s doubles partner, No. 55 McCarthy, also won in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-4, against Gabriel Wanderley. Novak moves to 14-2 overall on the season, with a team-high 10 wins in dual action, while McCarthy is now 13-2 in 2010-11.
Clinching the win for Ohio State was Allare. The 45th-ranked player nationally, Allare answered his doubles loss to Manzini with a 7-6, 6-4 victory to give Ohio State its fourth-consecutive singles point and the 4-1 win.
