COLUMBUS, Ohio – Iowa won six of 10 matches and received bonus points at two of them to halt Ohio State’s eight-match season-opening winning streak with a 21-13 victory on Friday evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Buckeyes are 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten while Iowa improves to 8-2, 4-1.

Ohio State picked up wins at 133, 141, 174 and 197 pounds, the most dominate of which was a 19-7 major decision for redshirt freshman Kollin Moore. Both Moore and Luke Pletcher notched their 20th wins of the year.

The dual began at 125 pounds with Thomas Gilman picking up a 23-8 technical fall over Jose Rodriguez that gave the Hawkeyes a quick 5-0 lead. Nathan Tomasello, however, swung it back in Ohio State’s favor with a 10-3 decision that was keyed by two first-period takedowns and another score in the waning seconds of the third period. He also added a riding time bonus point to improve to 11-0.

Pletcher then followed that with a gritty 5-4 win over that was clinched when he took Topher Carton down late in the third period and then successfully defended a takedown attempt with 10 seconds remaining in regulation. After a scoreless first period, Carton lead 1-0 following an escape, Pletcher took him down to move ahead 2-1, but Carton countered with an escape and takedown to move ahead 3-2. Pletcher escaped to begin the third period, setting up his winning scoring sequence.

IOWA WINS AT 149, 157, 165
In one of the feature matches of the night, third-ranked Brandon Sorensen edged No. 5 Micah Jordan 2-0 thanks to a second-period escape and riding time that was clinched by riding Jordan out for the entire third period. In the next match, second-ranked Michael Kemerer picked up a 14-3 major decision over Jake Ryan to take a 12-6 lead into intermission.

The Hawkeyes extended their lead to 15-6 thanks to Joey Gunther’s 3-0 decision over Cody Burcher. The only points of the match were scored on a second-period Gunther takedown and escape to open the final period.

Bo Jordan faced his first ranked opponent of the season and scoring a match-winning takedown in the final 20 seconds of regulation to knock off 11th-ranked Alex Meyer, 3-2. That win for Jordan (9-0) cut the Iowa lead to 15-9.

In another highly-anticipated match, Sammy Brooks edged Myles Martin 3-2 in a match that was decided by just one takedown. Moore, however, scored fast and furious in his bout against Cash Wilcke, racking up eight takedowns in a 19-7 major decision that improved his record to 20-2.

Needing a pin or technical fall in the final bout of the evening at heavyweight, senior Josh Fox lost a 6-1 decision to Steven Holloway. The two wrestlers were scoreless in the first period before Holloway scored two takedowns in the third period to pull away.

The Buckeyes are back in action next Friday, Feb. 3 when it hosts second-ranked Penn State at the Jerome Schottenstein Center beginning at 6 p.m. The dual can also be seen live on BTN.
