COLUMBUS, Ohio-The No. 39-ranked Ohio State men’s tennis team began the Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Ind. with a 4-0 victory over Penn State to advance to the second round. The Buckeyes’ record improves to 13-9, 7-4 in the Big Ten and Penn State’s record drops to 11-12 overall, 1-10 in the Big Ten.
The Buckeyes took the doubles point at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The No. 34-ranked duo of Andrew Carlson (Jr., Gambrills, Md./Arundel) and Chris Porter (Jr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) defeated Steve Van Der Westhuyzen and Jamie Gresh, 8-5. Ohio State’s Derek DeFalco (Jr., Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and Bob Wellstein (Jr., Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) won against Mark Dorfman and Matt Frakes, 8-4. The win tied DeFalco at No. 2 in all-time doubles wins (27) in a season with Kevin Dibelius (1990).
DeFalco was the first Buckeye to capture a singles win by quickly disposing of Damon Accardi, 6-0, 6-1. Phil Metz (Fr., Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) was next to leave the courts by defeating Jamie Gresh, 6-2, 6-1. Metz (26-11) has won five-consecutive matches. Bob Wellstein clinched the match with a win over Chris DeStefano, 6-2, 6-4.
Big Ten Championships’ rules state the first team to reach four points wins the match and all other matches are halted immediately (DNF-did not finish).
“It was a 4-3 match before against Penn State with the doubles point lost and this time it was a 4-0 solid win,” assistant coach Dave Schilling said. “We had the opportunity to see how much we’ve improved sine Feb. 26. Tomorrow we have the chance to avenge an earlier season loss to Indiana. The doubles point will be key.”
Ohio State will compete Friday in the second round of the Big Ten Championships at 1:30 cst against No. 27 Indiana. Ohio State 4, Penn State 0
