%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio– The Ohio State men’s tennis team, ranked No. 32 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, opened the spring portion of its schedule with victories over visiting Murray State, 6-1, and Butler, 7-0, Thursday at the Jesse Owens West Recreational Center. OSU stands 2-0 on the season with MSU and BU falling to 0-1 and 0-2 on the year, respectively.%^$

%^$”I was pleased with our performances today,” Ty Tucker, OSU head coach, said. “We were able to go out there and get the job done. In the second match (Butler), we were fired up and took care of business. Now we have to get ready for a tough Notre Dame team that has already defeated a Top 20 team this year.”%^$

%^$The Buckeyes opened the day with the 6-1 defeat of the Racers. In doubles, the teams of Derek DeFalco (Sr., Maumee, Ohio/Maumee) and Bob Wellstein (Sr., Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg), at No. 1, and Jonathon Scale (So., Acworth, Ga./Harrison) and Brenton Contini (Fr., Dover, Ohio/Dover), at No. 2, won their matches, 8-5 and 8-1, respectively. OSU lost its only match of the day when MSU’s Nikola Aracic defeated Scale, 6-3, 6-4.%^$

%^$In the second match, OSU brought it’s record to 2-0 with a clean-sweep of the Bulldogs. Phillip Metz (So.,. Mentor, Ohio/Mentor), Chris Porter (Sr., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) and Andrew Carlson (Sr., Gambrills, Md./Arundel) all won matches in their first action on the day at the No. 1-3 spots, respectively. Metz and Porter also combined to win at No. 3 doubles while Carlson and Scale defeated the BU team of Brandon Currie and Jimmy Borendame, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. Wellstein and DeFalco, after leading the team in doubles victories a year ago, won both of their doubles matches, including an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Alex Kurz and Peter Voelz.%^$

%^$The Buckeyes will return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Jesse Owens West Recreational Center when they play host to the No. 33 Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. The Irish are 2-1 overall after suffering their first loss Thursday, 4-3, to Indiana.%^$
