No. 3 Sasso Drops All-Star Match to No. 2 Gomez, 10-9

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso (r-Sr.), the No. 3-ranked wrestler nationally at 149 pounds, traveled to Austin, Texas, to participate in the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic Tuesday to take on No. 2-rated Austin Gomez of Wisconsin.

Two of the top wrestlers nationally went toe-to-toe in a high-scoring bout.

There was no score after the first three minutes of the match. Gomez started from the down position in the second and escaped for the first point of the bout. Sasso then scored a takedown to go up 2-1. Gomez added an escape to knot it at 2-all.

Sasso responded with another takedown to lead 4-2 heading into the third. The lead increased to 5-2 with a Sasso escape followed by a Gomez takedown and another Sasso escape to make it 6-4.

With a flurry of takedowns and Sasso escapes it was tied at 8-all before the Badger finished off the match for a 10-9 win by decision.

Sasso entered the match with a 5-1 record this year. Four of his wins have been pins with the other by victory by technical fall.

Gomez (4-1) also won the last battle vs. Sasso in the 2022 Big Ten Championships in Detroit. The pair battled for the Big Ten Championship with Gomez coming out on top with a win by decision, 8-5.

Gomez recently took out No. 1 Yianni Diakomihalis in a dual competition between the Badgers and Cornell. Gomez handed Diakomihalis a 9-3 loss by decision in a 19-13 upset win for Wisconsin at Cornell.

Diakomihalis knocked Sasso out of the 2022 NCAA Championships in the semifinals with a 6-3 win by decision. Diakomihalis went on to win the NCAA title at 149.

The No. 3 Buckeyes will next travel to Las Vegas for the 2022 Cliff Keen Invitational Dec. 1-2.
