COLUMBUS, Ohio – In the first match of its third home doubleheader of the season, the No.3 Ohio State men’s tennis team blanked No. 62 Penn State, 7-0, Sunday at The Ohio State University Varsity Indoor Tennis Center. Play was moved indoors because of morning showers in the Columbus area.
The Buckeyes (17-1; 2-0 Big Ten) remain hot, winning their ninth-consecutive match of the season. Ohio State improved its home win streak to 102 matches, its dual (non-tournament) win streak to 101 matches and its Big Ten league win streak to 55 consecutive matches. The team is now 106-5 in its last 111 league matches, including postseason play.
Under 11th-year head coach Ty Tucker, the Buckeyes are a perfect 12-0 against the Nittany Lions. The team has not suffered a loss to Penn State since the 1998-1999 campaign.
Sophomore Devin McCarthy claimed the match for the Buckeyes at No. 6 singles. It is the second time this season the native of Cincinnati, Ohio, has clinched a Big Ten team win. McCarthy won 6-1, 6-3, over Guillaume St-Maurice to mark his 12th victory on the year. He is now 7-0 in dual competition.
In doubles, the Buckeyes won the opening point for the eighth-consecutive match in a competitive start to the afternoon. Sophomore Chase Buchanan and freshman Dino Marcan, the 43rd-ranked pair in the nation, won their fifth straight match playing together at No. 1 doubles. The Buckeye duo continued their winning consistency, downing Warren Hardie and Jason Lee, 8-5, to progress to 6-1 overall.
At No. 2, senior co-captain Justin Kronauge and junior Balazs Novak claimed the doubles point seconds later following the Buckeye win at No. 1. Kronauge and Novak broke Eddie Bourchier and Taylor Cohen in the 13th and final game of the match to seal the 8-5 victory. The Buckeye pair remains undefeated at 5-0, while Kronauge continues his climb in the all-time doubles wins leader board, picking up his 110th win.
At No. 3, sophomore Steven Williams and junior Matt Allare paired for the second time together on the season and found themselves down 7-5 against Ryan Gormley and Bryan Welnetz. The Buckeyes battled back to force a superset tiebreaker and came through in the end, winning 9-8 (8-6). Williams has now won a doubles match with six different teammates this season, while Allare is 12-6 overall.
In singles, Buchanan, polled 17th in the country, did not take long to pick up his 16th win of the season. The native of New Albany, Ohio, won in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, over Bourchier at No. 1 and has now claimed seven straight victories.
Allare won at No. 6 to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 advantage. He defeated Welnetz 6-2, 6-4, to improve to 14-4 overall after breaking serve in the last game in both the first and second sets.
At No. 2, No. 26 Kronauge continued to be the hottest Buckeye in singles. He won his team-high ninth straight match after downing Gormley in a second set tiebreaker 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). Kronauge now has 131 career singles victories, which is third on the all-time career wins list. He is also the first Buckeye this season to hit the 20-win mark in singles.
Novak, a native of Budapest, Hungary, defeated Lee in straight sets 6-4, 6-3, to improve to 20-6 overall. Novak has now won at least 20 matches in each of his three seasons at Ohio State.
No. 74 Marcan, like Kronauge, also won his match in a second set tiebreaker. He battled hard to a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) win over Hardie for his 11th dual victory of the year.
