COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 27 men’s tennis team upset the No. 14 Rams, 4-2, Saturday at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes improved to 6-3 overall and extended its home winning streak to six. Virginia Commonwealth dropped to 9-3 on the season. Ohio State is back in action at noon, Feb. 23 in the Big Ten Conference opener against Penn State. The Nittany Lions are 3-1 on the season with one loss to Virginia Tech.

Ohio State opened the match with wins at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions to claim the doubles point. Conor Casey (Jr., Ontario, Canada) and Ross Wilson (Fr., Toledo, Ohio) defeated Virginia Commonwealth’s Florian Marquardt and Pedro Nieto, 9-7. The tandem of Casey and Wilson are undefeated (3-0) at the No. 1. In a tight match at two, Jeremy Wurtzman (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) and Scott Green (Fr., North Canton, Ohio) rallied for a victory and clinched the doubles point over Mats Norin and Marton Ott, 9-7. Wurtzman and Green hold a solid 5-1 record at the No. 2 position and are 5-3 in duals on the 2003 season. Vince Ng (Sr., Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Brenton Contini (Jr., Dover, Ohio) fell, 8-3, at the third position to Daniel Casquero and Francesc Lleal. The OSU pair drops to 7-2 overall.

Ng, No. 45, posted a 7-6, 6-1 decision over Ott at the No. 2 spot giving the Buckeyes the first singles point. Ng improves to 25-4 on the season and is 11 singles wins away from breaking the Ohio State career singles record. Wurtzman, ranked an Ohio State record high of No. 7, added the third point for the Buckeyes after the, 3-6, 6-3, (6-2), tiebreaker victory over Marquardt at the No. 1 position. He claimed his seventh 2003 duals win.

Wilson clinched the crucial win for the Buckeyes after defeating Lleal in a tiebreaker, 6-2, 0-6, (6-3), at the No. 6 slot. The freshman is off to a perfect 4-0 duals record with two wins at No. 6.

Next up, the Buckeye squad returns to Columbus looking to stay on track with its home (6-0) winning streak. Ohio State will play host to Maryland at 11 a.m. and Cleveland State at 6 p.m., Feb. 28 at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes will face Indiana State at noon, March 1 at the West Recreation Center.
