COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 25 Ohio State women’s soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to No 24 Dayton Wednesday evening at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
In a chippy first half, the Buckeyes almost capitalized on a pair of headers by Paige Maxwell. In the 21st minute, Maxwell’s header off a long ball from Kiiri Kuld drifted wide right. In the 32nd, Maxwell’s header sailed just over the crossbar off a perfect cross from Kendyl Reed on the right wing.
The Buckeyes almost scored two minutes later on a cross by Danielle Scoliere but Dayton goalkeeper Katherine Boone was able to deflect it away before Aly Walker was able to head it in from point blank range.
The Flyers then took the 1-0 advantage into the break when Katrin Loo headed in Alysha Mallon’s left-footed corner from six yards out in the 36th minute.
Dayton held a 6-4 advantage in shots, 3-0 on goal, over the first 45 minutes.
Neither team had much in the way of opportunities in the second half until Danica Wu uncorked a shot from 20 yards out in the 84th minute that Boone was able to deflect out of play.
The Buckeyes had one final chance in the last 20 seconds when Liz Sullivan found Maxwell with a long ball on the end line but Maxwell’s left-footed cross toward Chelsy Swackhamer was cleared at the last second by a Dayton defender.
For the game, Ohio State held a narrow 12-11 advantage in shots including 6-3 on goal.
