No. 24 Ohio State Falls in Overtime to No. 25 Maine

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite a strong second half offensive effort, the No. 24 Buckeyes fell to the No. 25 Maine Black Bears 2-1 on Saturday night at New Balance Field in Boston.

The Buckeyes recorded eight shots, with five landing on cage while the Black Bears recorded four shots on goal on 14 attempts. Ohio State falls to 1-2 on the season while Maine improves to 3-0.



Both teams went scoreless for the first 52 minutes of the contest. Then, at 52:45, Maine scored off of a rebounded shot that hit the Buckeye goal post to take the first lead of the game.

Two minutes later, Ohio State earned its second corner of the half to put the team in scoring position. Freshman forward Jessica Hourihane converted a corner opportunity to put the Buckeyes on the board. Senior Courtney Daniels recorded her second assist of the season on the pass to Hourihane.

At the end of regulation, the score remained tied at one and the teams took the field for overtime. Maine took a shot 4:23 into the period, recovered possession after it was blocked, and scored the game-winning goal.



  • The Buckeyes played in their second consecutive overtime game against the Black Bears. The team is now 1-1 in overtime contests.
  • Jessica Hourihane’s second half game-tying goal is her first goal as a Buckeye.
  • Despite being outshot by the Black Bears in the first half, Ohio State matched Maine with six shots in the second.
  • In her first start as a Buckeye, freshman goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez recorded two saves.
  • The Buckeyes are now 5-3 all-time against the Black Bears.



The Buckeyes remain in Boston to play No. 19 Boston University on Monday at 1:00 p.m. It will be the first time since 1997 that the teams will play each other.
