COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 24 Ohio State women’s volleyball team battled No. 20 Oregon in the 2012 Sports Imports DC Koehl Classic championship match and fell to the Ducks, 3-2 (17-25, 21-25, 25-14, 26-24, 15-10), Saturday night in St. John Arena.

Seniors Emily Danks and Mari Hole were named to the All-Tournament team. Oregon’s Alaina Bergsma and Arianna Williams were also named to the team with Bergsma being the tournament Most Valuable Player.

Danks led the Buckeyes (2-1) with 22 kills, tying a career best. She added nine digs and three block assists. Hole finished with 19 kills and eight digs. Defensively, junior Davionna DiSalvatore tallied 17 digs and freshman Andrea Kacsits had a match-high five blocks (1s, 4a). Setter Amanda Peterson totaled 45 assists with nine digs for Ohio State.

Bergsma had a match-high 23 kills and added 15 digs for Oregon (3-0). Liz Brenner totaled 15 kills, while Williams and Fischer finished with 12. Setter Lauren Plum led the match with 61 assists and libero Haley Jacobs had a match-best 20 digs.

The two teams battled back and forth to start the first set until, tied at 15-15, a kill by Hole sent Ohio State on a six-point run for a 21-15 lead. The Buckeyes finished the set on a 5-1 run highlighted by three kills from Danks for a 25-17.

Ohio State opened set two one a 4-2 run, but the Ducks came back to tie the set at five apiece. Tied at 11-11, a kill and solo block by Kaitlyn Leary gave the Buckeyes a 13-12 advantage. A kill by Peterson set Ohio State on another run for an 18-15 lead and another three-point run closed out the set for the Buckeyes, 25-21.

In the third set, Ohio State grabbed a quick lead before the Ducks pushed a seven-point rally for a11-6 advantage. Another big Oregon run brought the visiting team to an 18-11 lead and the Ducks won their first set of the match with a 25-14 victory.

A kill by freshman Katie Mitchell put Ohio State up 6-4 in the fourth and kills by Booth and Danks set the score 10-6 Buckeyes. Oregon tied the set at 13-13 and the two squads exchanged serves for the next couple points. A three-point Ducks run gave the visitors a 22-20 lead and Oregon held on for a 26-24 win to force a fifth set.

Tied at 2-2, the Ducks rattled off a 7-2 run for a 9-3 lead. A kill by Danks and an Oregon attack error brought the Buckeyes within four at 12-8, but the Ducks were too much as the visitors took a 15-10 victory to win the championship.

The Buckeyes hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to College Park, Md., for the Maryland Invitational, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. The squad plays Binghamton Friday at 5 p.m. and follows with two matches Saturday vs. Seton Hall and host Maryland.
