The No. 24 men’s tennis team was upset, 6-1, by Vanderbilt Sunday at the Brownlee O. Currey Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn. The Buckeyes fall to 5-3 on the 2003 season and the Commodores improve to 6-1. Ohio State is perfect at home (5-0) and drops to 0-3 on the road. In the last meeting between the teams, Ohio State fell to the Commodores, 4-3, in the first round of play at the 2002 NCAA Championships.
Vanderbilt dominated doubles action as it swept Ohio State at all three positions. Conor Casey (Jr., Ontario, Canada) and Dennis Mertens (Fr., Braaschaat, Belgium) were paired at the No. 1 position. The Ohio State duo fell to Bobby Reynolds and Lewie Smith, 8-3. Ohio State gave Vanderbilt the doubles point at the No. 2 position. Jeremy Wurtzman (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) and Scott Green (Fr., North Canton, Ohio) suffered the loss to Scott Brown and Chad Harris, 8-5. Vanderbilt’s Zach Dailey and Jens Pilgram-Larsen wrapped up doubles play after defeating Ohio State’s Vince Ng (Sr., Broadview Heights, Ohio) and Brenton Contini (Jr., Dover, Ohio), 8-3. Ng and Contini, now 7-1, suffered their first doubles loss of the 2003 season.
Wurtzman, ranked No. 7 in the country, fell to No. 8 Reynolds, 7-6, 6-0, at the No. 1 singles position. The first set was forced into a tiebreaker where Reynolds picked up a 3-0 lead and continued his momentum into the second set to beat Wurtzman. Ng, ranked No. 45, went into the No. 2 position with a 24-3 singles record on the year. Harris, ranked No. 14, defeated Ng, 6-2, 6-1. Casey had a tight first set (7-5) against Vanderbilt’s Dailey, though slipped, 6-1, in the second set at the No. 4 position. At the No. 5 singles position, Contini tallied one point for the Buckeyes after defeating Vanderbilt’s Scott Brown, 6-4, 7-6. Contini continued his winning streak, improving his 2003 dual record to 6-0.
Next up, the Buckeye squad returns to Columbus looking to stay on track with its home (5-0) winning streak. Ohio State will play host to No. 16 Virginia Commonwealth at noon, Saturday Feb. 22 at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center. The Buckeyes will face Penn State in the Big Ten opener at noon, Sunday Feb. 23 at the West Recreation Center.
