COLUMBUS, Ohio – After an opening round of 10-under 278, the Ohio State men’s golf team currently leads the 17-team field at Florida Atlantic’s Spring Break Championship. Competing on the par 72, 6,750-yard Legends Golf Course at the Gleneagles Country Club in Delray Beach, Fla., the Buckeyes hold an eight-stroke advantage over second-place DePaul.

Sitting in first place after 18 holes, junior Dan Charen currently leads the Buckeyes and the field after a stellar round of 67. Tying his career-low, the Langhorne, Pa., native made the turn at 5-under after carding an eagle and three birdies.

Charen would go on to card two more birdies on the back nine to offset his only hiccup that came in the form of two bogeys.

Also finding a slot in the Top 5 is senior Michael Cress who is tied for second after a round of 68. Opening with a bogey and double-bogey, the Dublin, Ohio, product would not slip again as he went on to notch nine pars and seven birdies.

Carding two birdies, Brad Smith also fired a round under par in day one. Opening with a score of 71, the senior from Peru, Ind., is currently tied for 10th.

Tallying four birdies to offset four bogeys, sophomore Jamie Sindelar, from Horseheads, N.Y., concluded the round with an even 72 to sit in a tie for 15th.

Rounding out the Buckeye lineup is senior Bo Hoag. The Upper Arlington, Ohio, native is tied for 55th at 77.

Competing as individuals, sophomore Matt Turner, junior Alex Redfield and senior Tanner Murphy also fared well in day one. Redfield is currently tied for 10th after a score of 71, while Murphy is tied for 15th and Turner is tied for 36th after rounds of 72 and 74, respectively. 

The three-day, 54-hole event will continue tomorrow with 11:30 a.m. tee times.
