COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 24 Ohio State baseball team (34-12 overall, 15-5 in the Big Ten) lost to the Eastern Michigan Eagles (16-29 overall), 10-7, Wednesday night at Bill Davis Stadium. Mike Check (Sr., Bay Village, Ohio) paced the OSU offense, going 3-for-5 with a double, triple and three runs batted in.

Eastern Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Tony Palazzolo led off the game with a solo home run off starting pitcher Kyle Brown (So., Washington Court House, Ohio).

The Buckeyes responded quickly in the bottom of the first inning. Mike Harris (Sr., Hillsborough, N.C.) and Check led off with back-to-back singles. The duo moved into scoring position after a sacrifice bunt by Doug Dendinger (Jr., Greenwich, Ohio). Steve Caravati (Fr., Dover, Ohio) followed and belted a double off the center field wall to clear the bases and give OSU a 2-0 lead.

OSU added a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, Chris Alvord (Sr., Mentor, Ohio) singled to center field. Harris followed with a walk and Check drove in the duo with a triple down the right field line.

The Buckeyes increased their lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brett Garrard (Fr., Brownsburg, Ind.) led off with a walk and Trent McIlvain (Sr., Louisville, Ohio) followed with a single to left field. They then moved into scoring position courtesy of a sacrifice bunt by Alvord. Harris drove in Garrard with a sacrifice fly and Check followed with a double to plate McIlvain.

In the top of the fifth inning, EMU cut the OSU lead to 6-4. Palazzolo, Nick Soliz and Tim Clouse each drove in runs with RBI singles.

EMU added another run in the top of the sixth inning when Palazzolo coaxed a bases loaded walk off reliever Kevin Wynk (So., Coldwater, Ohio) to score Andy Busch and cut the OSU lead to 6-5.

The Eastern Michigan rally continued in the top of the seventh inning as they scored two runs to take a 7-6 lead. Bush drove in a run on a grounder and Luke Beeler gave EMU the lead when he drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

The Buckeyes fired back in the bottom half of the seventh inning. With one out, Dendinger took a 2-1 offering from EMU starting pitcher Joe Linde over the left field wall to tie the game at seven.

But the Eagles would not go away easily. With two outs, Palazzolo scored from third courtesy of a wild pitch by Brandon Steen (Jr., Hendersonville, Tenn.) and Justin Hesse followed with a two-run home run to give EMU a 10-7 lead.

OSU starting pitcher Brown did not factor into the decision. He went 5.0 innings, gave up eight hits, four runs (all earned) walked two and recorded three strikeouts. Steen (4-3) took the loss. EMU’s Linde (6-5) picked up the win. He went 8.1 innings, threw 146 pitches, gave up 11 hits, seven runs, walked three batters and recorded three strikeouts. Anthony Tomey picked up his fourth save of the year.

Tomorrow, the Buckeyes will play host to Cincinnati at 6:35 p.m. This weekend, the team travels to Bloomington, Ind., for a four-game series against the Indiana Hoosiers. The series opener on Saturday begins at 4 p.m.
