BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The No. 24 Ohio State baseball team (37-12 overall, 17-5 in the Big Ten) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning courtesy Nick Swisher’s (So., Parkersburg, W.Va.) 14th home run of the season and defeated the Indiana Hoosiers (22-27-1 overall, 5-16 in the Big Ten), 10-8 in game one of a doubleheader at Sembower Field. Later in the game, Swisher notched his third multiple home run game of the season when he belted his 15th home run of the season. He finished the game 4-for-5 with six runs batted in. Indiana attempted a rally in the seventh inning but stopper Cory Cox (Sr., Chillicothe, Ohio) recorded the final out to pick up his school record setting 10th save of the season. With the win, the Buckeyes take a 2-0 lead in the four-game series.
The Buckeyes went on the attack in the top of the first inning. Mike Harris (Sr., Hillsborough, N.C.) and Mike Check (Sr. Bay Village, Ohio) led off and reached base on back-to-back singles. Two batters later, Swisher hammered a 1-2 pitch from IU starter Nick Otte over the left field wall for a three-home run.
In the top of the third inning, OSU increased its lead to 4-0. Doug Dendinger (Jr., Greenwich, Ohio) led off with a walk and later moved to third on a single by Swisher. Doug Deeds (Fr., Bexley, Ohio) then drove in the run from third base with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Buckeyes added another run in the top of the fourth inning. Joe Wilkins (Jr., Greenwich, Ohio) led off with a single to right field and then moved to second base on a wild pitch by Otte. With two outs, Check fired a single to right field to plate Wilkins and increase the OSU lead to 5-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, OSU added another run. With one out, Deeds blasted a 3-1 offering from Otte over the right field wall for a solo home run. The blast was his 11th of the season.
In the top of the sixth inning, Swisher belted a two-run home run off a 2-1 offering from IU reliever Nick Vitielliss. The blast was his 15th of the season and gave OSU an 8-0 lead.
Indiana reached the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning when Vasilli Spanos scored on a grounder by Michael Woodside.
The Buckeyes added two more runs in the top of the seventh of a sacrifice fly by Dendinger and a one-run single by Swisher.
Indiana rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh, including a Spanos two-run home run. But Cox cut the rally short by recording the final out of the game.
Starting pitcher Kevin Goodrum (Sr., Mentor, Ohio) improved to 5-1 with the win. He threw 134 pitches, scattered eight hits, gave up eight runs (all earned) walked five and recorded five strikeouts. Otte (8-4) took the loss. He went 4.2 innings, gave up nine hits, six runs (all earned), walked four and recorded four strikeouts.
