The No. 23 Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team finished its dual met season with a 128-112 win over Penn State Saturday. The Buckeyes end their dual meet season with a 10-1 record and now turn their attention to the conference championship in two weeks, Feb. 24-26.

Ohio State started off the meet with a 2-second win over the Penn State 400-yard medley relay team. The Buckeye team, composed of R.J. Lemyre (So., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Matt Jeffries (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind./Perry Meridian), Chris Stoneburg (Jr., Copley, Ohio/Akron Firestone) and Michael Byrnes (So., Wyoming, Ohio/Wyoming) reached the wall in 3:21.57 while the Penn State team followed with a time of 3:23.05. Shortly after, Joe Doyle (So., Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) out-reached the other swimmers in the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:41.85. Mike Tomes (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Univ. of Evansville) placed third in the same event, one-tenth of a second behind Doyle (1:41.95).

The Buckeyes recorded another first- and third-place win in the 50-yard freestyle when Matt Voelker (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Gary Grant (So., Wood-Ridge, N.J./Bergen Catholic) clocked in at 20.76 and 21.29, respectively. The two Buckeyes were only separated by Penn State swimmer Daryl Northrop who recorded a time of 20.78. The win was followed by a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard individual medley. Nate King (So., Youngstown, Ohio/Warren Harding) out-swam the other competitors to a 1:52.71 finish with fellow Buckeye Brian Tiemeier (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/LaSalle) right behind him (1:52.77).

Grant then recorded a win of his own when the Buckeyes swept the Top 3 spots in the 100-yard butterfly. Grant hit the wall in 50.14, followed by teammates Marty Tomes (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) and Stoneburg who hit the wall in 50.43 and 51.05, respectively. Byrnes gave the Buckeyes a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle, with Blake Foltz (Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo./Cheyenne Mountain) and Doyle placing third and fourth in the same event, respectively.

Ohio State obtained another 2-3-4 finish in the 100-yard backstroke. Lemyre followed Nittany Lion swimmer Shawn McLin to a 51.65 second-place finish. Ben Prater (Fr., New Albany, Ohio/Columbus Acadamy) then clocked in at 52.08 and Daniel Novak (Fr., Sao Paolo, Brazil/Foothill Knight) followed with 52.75. A third 2-3-4 finish came in the 500-yard freestyle. King touched the wall in 4:38.65, Nick Keene (So., West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) followed with 4:41.76 and Mike Tomes finished fourth for the Buckeyes in 4:43.29.

In the diving well, Mitch Richeson (Sr., Greenwood, Ind./Greenwood) claimed both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards for the fourth time this season. Richeson, the current Big Ten Diver of the Week, claimed the 1-meter board with 249 points and the 3-meter board with 232.80 points. On the 3-meter board he was followed by fellow Buckeye Kellen Harkness (So., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) who scored 222.30 points.

The Buckeyes wrapped up the meet with first-place wins in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Rob Kauscher (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson) recorded the win for Ohio State in the 100-yard breaststroke. Kauscher, who is No. 34 in the country in the event, clocked in at 56.56. Jeffries and Tiemeier followed Kauscher to second- and third-place finishes, respectively. The 200-yard freestyle relay team then claimed the event in a time of 1:22.60.

Ohio State will have a two-week break before it heads to Minneapolis, Minn., for the 2005 Big Ten Championships Feb. 24-26.
