No. 22 Buckeyes Post 6-1 Win over Fighting Irish

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 22 Ohio State women’s tennis team defeated Notre Dame, 6-1, Sunday in the Varsity Tennis Center. The Buckeyes improve to 3-1 on the year, while Notre Dame falls to 2-1.

Ohio State claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and three for a 1-0 advantage going into singles. Senior Anna Sanford was the first Buckeye off the court dropping just two games on court one to claim the first singles point for Ohio State. The next two matches wrapped up within minutes of each another, with Shiori Fukuda and Olivia Sneed notching wins, to secure Ohio State’s victory. Emma DeCoste and Danielle Wolf both won in super tiebreakers for a 6-1 final.

In Doubles …
The tandem of Olivia Sneed and Mary Beth Hurley was the first off the courts after Notre Dame posted the first win, 6-3. Shortly after, Wolf and DeCoste claimed the first victory for the Buckeyes on court three, 6-4, over Ally Bojzuk and Rachel Chong.

It came down to court one where Sanford and Shiori Fukuda came back against Brooke Broda and Allison Miller. The Buckeyes saved matches points and edged ahead, 6-5, but the Irish duo held to force a tiebreak. All eyes focused on the tiebreaker, where the Buckeyes shut out the Notre Dame duo to clinch the doubles point.

Ohio State has won the doubles point in all four matches this season, with Sanford and Fukuda 4-0 on court one.

In Singles …
After a dominant performance from Sanford against Broda on court one, 6-2, 6-0, with the Buckeye winning the last eight games, Fukuda downed Miller, 6-1, 6-3, on court two. Just minutes later Sneed beat Zoe Spence on court three in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Sneed’s victory gave the Buckeyes the match victory. Play remained on courts four, five and six, and each went into a super tiebreak.

The Buckeyes on courts five and six both came back from a set down to win. Against Caroline Dunleavy on court five, DeCoste dropped the first set 6-3, but won the second, 6-4. She claimed the victory in the super tiebreak, 10-6, marking her first career dual match singles win. Wolf also came from a set down to win in a match tiebreaker, as she defeated Rachel Chong on court six, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6).

Court four was the last to finish as Cameron Corse defeated Ohio State’s Mary Beth Hurley, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12).

Up Next …
Ohio State opens Big Ten play with a 5 p.m. match at Penn State Feb. 22. The Buckeyes will return home to host Arizona State at noon Feb. 25 inside the Varsity Tennis Center. Admission is free.
