Buckeyes led by junior In Hong Lim at 3-over to tie for fifth place

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 21st-ranked Ohio State women’s golf team had a tough time in the opening round with a score of 315 (+27) but managed to hang on to eighth place Friday at the 38th Annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Ga. The event is being held on the par 72, 6,335-yard University of Georgia Golf Course.

The 22-team field features 19 teams ranked in the top 50 of the most recent Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. Leading the pack by 10 strokes after the first round is sixth-ranked Duke with a team score of 300. The center of the standings is tight with only seven strokes separating the 11 teams that stand between t-7th and t-15th place.

In Hong Lim fired an opening round of 3-over to tie for fifth and lead the Buckeyes. Starting on hole 10, the junior from Melbourne, Australia, bogeyed No. 11 and the only big hiccup of the round was a double-bogey on the par 3 No. 13, but she offset it with birdies on 12 and 16. She made par on nine of her last 11 holes with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 4 and 5.

Senior captain Emma Jandel had a tough first round with four bogeys on each of her front and back nine. The Dayton, Ohio, native tallied a birdie on No. 6 to finish the round 7-over and tie for 32nd.

Sitting at 8-over is freshman Amy Meier to tie for 46th. The Rochester Hills, Mich., product stumbled out of the gates and was 6-over on her opening seven holes. She settled down at the turn and was only 2-over her last 11 holes.

With the reverse start was fellow rookie Rachel Rohanna, who started strong and made par on eight of her first 10 holes with bogeys on Nos. 10 and 15. The native of Waynesburg, Pa., then hit a tough patch and was 5-over on Nos.  2-5 and finished with a double-bogey on 9. She is tied for 55th with a round of 81.

Also tied for 55th is sophomore Vicky Villanueva struggled with stretches of consecutive bogeys, including Nos. 2-5, for a first-round score of 81.

Competing as an individual is freshman Susana Benavides who carded an 80 to tie for 46th place.
