Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio State wrestling team (8-10, 4-4 Big Ten) dropped a tight 23-18 decision against No. 10 Iowa (11-4, 6-2 Big Ten) Friday evening at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa. The Buckeyes headed into the final match of the evening at 149 pounds with a shot to win the dual as two Top 10 wrestlers battled into overtime. No. 8 Ty Eustice of Iowa emerged with an overtime victory over No. 10 Jeff Ratliff (Marion, Ohio/Marion) to seal the Hawkeye victory. The pair traded escapes in regulation as the match headed to overtime knotted at 1-1. With 34 seconds left in the first overtime period, Eustice posted a takedown to claim the 3-1 sudden victory and Iowa’s 11th dual win of the season.

The Buckeyes overcame an early 12-4 deficit behind consecutive wins by No. 14 J.D. Bergman (Oak Harbor, Ohio/Oak Harbor), who tallied a fall versus No. 11 Ryan Fulsaas and senior Tommy Rowlands (Hilliard, Ohio/Bishop Ready), who scored a major decision against Hawkeye Ryan Fuller HWT.

The Buckeyes claimed their first win at 165 pounds as senior John Clark’s (Canton, N.Y./ Canton) 20-5 technical fall over Mark Mueller. The match put the Buckeyes on the board with an early 5-4 lead following a major decision loss in the opening match at 157 pounds.

The Hawkeyes gained the lead after No. 2 Tyler Nixt defeated 174 Anthony Magistrelli (Maple Heights, Ohio/ Maple Heights) via a 20-6 major decision. Iowa continued their lead with another victory at 184 as 12th-ranked Paul Bradley scored a 5-3 decision over senior Blake Kaplan (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Sycamore), who is ranked No. 9 in the latest rankings.

At 197, Bergman was able to narrow the eight-point deficit after his fall over Fulsaas at the 4:41 mark of the match. En route to his fall, Bergman was able to collect his team-best 10th takedown of the season. With the score even at 11-11, No. 1 Rowlands added four points to the Buckeye total after scoring a 16-7 major decision against Fuller. Rowlands notched multiple takedowns in each period to give Ohio State a 15-11 lead entering the bout at 125.

The Hawkeyes were able to tie the score for the second time of the evening after No. 2 Luke Eustice posted a 17-5 major decision over freshman Jermaine Jones (West Chester, Pa./ Henderson). At 133, senior Jesse Leng (Hinckley, Ohio/ Highland) added a three-point decision over Trent Goodale to give the Buckeyes the 18-15 lead.

The lead changed hands for the final time as the Hawkeyes pocketed five points via a 22-6 technical fall at 141 pounds when No.5 Cliff Moore defeated Theo Dotson (Columbus, Ohio/ Hamilton TWP.) before the Hawkeyes sealed the team victory at 149.

The Buckeyes conclude their regular season Saturday night against No. 16 Northern Iowa at 8 p.m. in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
