COLUMBUS, Ohio – Alayna Markwordt scored four goals and Jayme Beard added four points off a pair of goals and assists, but the No. 20 Ohio State took a 19-8 loss to No. 10 and conference-leading Vanderbilt Saturday afternoon at the Vanderbilt Soccer/Lacrosse Complex in Nashville, Tenn. All of the Buckeyes’ (7-4, 1-2 ALC) losses this season have come at the hands of higher-ranked teams, including two vs. Top 10 foes.
Maghan Beaudrault struck first for Ohio State, breaking into Vanderbilt’s (9-3, 3-0 ALC) 4-1 start to the game to make it 2-1 at the 21:17 mark. Ally Carey, who finished with a game-high six goals for the Commodores, scored three of Vandy’s first four goals in this run.
Markwordt stalled the Commodore scoring spree with her first tally of the day at 19:26 off an assist from Tewaaraton Trophy candidate Kelly Haggerty to make it 4-2, but the Buckeyes would not bring the margin any closer through the remainder of the day.
Vanderbilt answered with eight of the next nine first-half goals, broken up only by Beard’s first at 7:34, to bring the squads into the intermission with a 12-3 ledger.
The Commodores struck first in the second, but Markwordt and Brittney Zerhusen rattled off back-to-back goals 33 seconds apart to make the score 13-5 with 25:16 to play. From there, the Buckeyes were able to add one goal for every two Vanderbilt put in the back of the net, including two from Markwordt off Beard assists.
Haggerty and Markwordt each extended their point-scoring streaks in the loss to 29 and 25 games, respectively. At the start of the week, they were each among 23 NCAA players with active scoring streaks of at least 20 games.
The Buckeyes were out-shot 42-21 on the day, giving OSU goalie Annie Carruthers 18 saves on the day. She now has tallied at least 10 in six games this season.
The Buckeyes wrap up a three-game road swing with a 7 p.m. Wednesday game at in-state rival Cincinnati. The Bearcats are 4-6 on the season after dropping a 21-8 decision to No. 14 Georgetown Friday afternoon.
