COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 20 men’s tennis team dominated the courts Friday at Jesse Owens West Recreation Center in Columbus, Ohio. The Buckeyes defeated Maryland, 5-2 and swept the Cleveland State Vikings, 7-0. Ohio State continued its winning ways, improving to 9-3, 1-0 in the Big Ten, on the season and 9-0 at home. The Terrapins dropped to 2-2 and Cleveland State fell to a spring record of 4-9.
In doubles action, Ohio State handed Maryland and Cleveland State defeats on all courts. Conor Casey (Jr., Ontario, Canada) and Jeremy Wurtzman (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) were paired at the No. 1 slot in both matches. The duo claimed both of their victories by the score of 8-2. The tandem of Scott Green (Fr., North Canton, Ohio) and Ross Wilson (Fr., Toledo, Ohio) dominated the match against Cleveland State’s Paul Harley and Jordan Reynolds. The OSU pair handled the Vikings 8-0. Brenton Contini (Jr., Dover, Ohio) and Dennis Mertens (Fr., Braaschatt, Belgium) were paired at No. 3 and defeated Maryland’s Scott Baxter and Scott Peters, 8-4. Contini and Vince Ng (Sr., Broadview Heights, Ohio) didn’t allow Cleveland State’s Adam Mercurio and Shawn Whitehoust a point as they closed their match at 8-0.
Victories at the singles positions proved to be milestones for the Buckeyes. Ng, ranked No. 65 in the latest ITA polls (Feb. 26), progressed to 10-2 in 2003 duals and lowered the countdown to eight wins on his wat to setting the Ohio State career-singles record. Ng defeated Chris Chiu of Maryland, 7-5, 6-2, at the No. 2 position and went 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 slot against Cleveland State’s Eric Winn.
Ng has 118 singles wins at Ohio State. He trails Roger Smith, who finished his career with 126 singles victories. Wurtzman, ranked No. 13 in the country, improved to 10-2 in duals and 21-6 on the season with wins on the Nos. 1 and 2 courts. Contini and Wilson hold a stellar duals record. With a 6-2, 6-4 win over Maryland’s Peters, Contini moves to a perfect 8-0 duals record with five victories at the No. 5 slot. Wilson highlights his freshman start with a 7-0 duals record, holding five wins on court No. 5. He defeated Maryland’s Baxter, 6-1, 6-3 and Cleveland State’s Reynolds, 6-0, 6-1.
Casey and Mertens gave solid performances against Cleveland State. Casey won 6-0, 6-2 against Harley, improving his duals record to 6-4. Mertens only gave up one game to Whitehoust with a 6-0, 6-1 defeat and advanced to 2-1 at the No. 4 position. Ben Kirksey (Jr., Canton, Ohio) split his two singles matches with a loss at No. 3 to Maryland’s Pierre Rudder, 6-3, 6-4 and a victory over Cleveland State’s Mercurio, 6-1, 6-0.
Next up, Ohio State is back on the road for a 1 p.m. match against No. 8 Mississippi, Sunday March 9 in Oxford, Miss.
